Saskatchewan softball season kicks off in Prince Albert

May 22, 2026 | 12:47 PM

Softball season is about to get started in Saskatchewan, and a big tournament in Prince Albert is set to kick things off.

The Prince Albert Minor Softball Association (PAMSA) is hosting their Grand Slam Ball tournament this weekend at Prime Minister’s Park. Teams in the U13, U15, and U17 age groups will be competing from all over the province.

Neil Finch is on the board for PAMSA and it also the coach for Prince Albert’s U17 boys, and he’s excited to be helping kick off the softball season.

“It’s the first Grand Slam for all age categories, so a lot of teams might be in their first games of the season, so there’ll be some rough edges that needs to be taken off of players, but also at the same time it’ll be a good tune-up for the rest of the season leading up to the provincial and nationals.”

These tournaments serve as essentially the ‘regular season’ for softball around the province because the teams are spread out and don’t have enough for regular league play. As a result, all teams host a tournament at some point, but most teams keep their tournaments to a single age group.

Prince Albert does something different. Because Prince Albert has established itself as a hot spot for softball in the province, and so Finch believes that hosting a big tournament with all age groups involved is helping to build excitement around the sport.

“What we decided in Prince Albert is to host all age categories together and bring some excitement around what that looks like. So there’ll be a lot of buzz around the diamond with all three age categories there this weekend.”

With Prince Albert hosting the World Softball Championships last summer, and a qualifying event for the same championship the year prior, the city has established itself as one of the top softball locations in Saskatchewan. For Finch though, he believes that the bigger reason Prince Albert has become one of those hot spots is because of the quality of play they have put on the field.

“When it comes to both boys and girls softball, PA has a lot of pride in what we do. I’m not sure if we’re the main hub, but we’re definitely one of the main hubs in the province around softball. We’re well known for not only our facilities, but the product on the field and the talented players that we put together on our teams.”

All four diamonds at Prime Minister Park will be in use starting at 8:45 a.m. on Saturday when Prince Albert’s U13 team takes on the Parkland U13 Green team on the Optimist diamond.
