Prince Albert’s 50th Winter Festival commemorates the past

Jan 27, 2014 | 5:35 AM

The 50th anniversary of Prince Albert’s Winter Festival is next month. According to the festival’s website, the event is known as one of the largest winter events in Western Canada.

Festival board member Barrett Prokopie said there will be outdoor events at the riverbank and music at the Exhibition Centre. He said this event has been really positive for the community.

“People want to see it succeed, it’s one of our last long running traditions in the city,” said Prokopie.

This year’s event will be special because they are commemorating the past, according to Prokopie. He said they have attempted to bring back events such as:

-Music legends performing in the Country North Show
-A dinner with all former Mr. and Mrs. Winter Festival participants
– Dog Pulls
-Hockey Tournaments

Former board members with experience have been asked to join this year’s team to plan the event, and Prokopie said many were happy to step in and help where they could.

He explained even though they’re commemorating the past, they still want all ages to enjoy the festival creating “Synergy between the new stuff and the old stuff and drawing different demographics and ages in (to the event).”

Prokopie said the festival is almost finalized and the event is scheduled to take place Feb.10 until Feb. 23.
