Sandy Lake Chiefs take down defending champs to win 2026 Senators Cup

The Sandy Lake Chiefs were the last team standing at the 2026 Senators Cup over the weekend.

The high-level Indigenous tournament, hosted by the Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC), saw the Chiefs claim top spot in the championship’s 10th annual instalment, where the team claimed the Senators Cup and the $30,000 grand prize.

Sandy Lake toppled the defending Sen’s Cup champs in the Norway House Bruins in the gold medal, winning 3-2 in overtime. The win capped off an undefeated run at the tournament, going 5-0.

Meanwhile, Norway House took home the second-place prize of $15,000 after taking the long road.

The Bruins won their first game of the tournament on Friday afternoon before falling to the Round Lake Bears in their second game, pushing them into the loser’s bracket. There, they then won seven straight games, including three on Saturday and four on Sunday, to advance to the gold medal game on Sunday night, which was their fifth game of the day.

Those seven wins included one against Round Lake, a win that sent the Bears into third place where they won $8,000. Norway House also handed the fourth place $5,000 prize to the Canoe Lake Young Guns in the game before.

The Senators Cup was the last major tournament to be played on the schedule before the 10th annual Fred Sasakamoose “Chief Thunderstick” National Hockey Championship in Saskatoon next month.
