Carlton students bring Mamma Mia to life

A well-known love story that has been performed on stages around the world and on the big screen, has now been brought to life by the theatre department at Carlton Comprehensive Public High School.

Mamma Mia opens Thursday night in the school’s cafetorium and following last year’s production of the Addams Family, represents only the second musical to be performed there. Director Kayleigh Skomorowski told paNOW the musical featuring songs by ABBA can still appeal to today’s youth.

“The stories and the lyrics in all those songs are very transgenerational. They are classic ideas of love and happiness and having a good time so they are all themes our kids can certainly relate to,” she said.

The production features a cast and crew of 50 students, and the set was designed by the school’s construction and carpentry students. Actress Kiara Levesque acknowledged there’s a lot of pressure performing a well-known story.

“Knowing it has to be as perfect as it can be and having to learn all those lines so quickly like we’ve only been practicing four months to come and have a full show,” she said.

Evyn Bell plays one of the potential father roles and noted the various moving parts involved in a big production include acting, but also lighting and sound.

“I think we’ve done an excellent job and I’m really excited for how it’s gonna turn out,” he said.

Tickets are available at the school’s head office or through their social media page. The show runs the nights of April 30, May 1, and May 2.
