Growing something bigger: How one Prince Albert business is cultivating community and sustainability
In a city already known for its natural beauty, one local entrepreneur is working to make Prince Albert even greener, one garden, one compost bin, and one connection at a time.
Keri Sapsford, owner of The Backyard and Compost Corner, has built her business around a simple but powerful idea: helping people reconnect with nature and each other. What started as a small composting hobby in 2018 has grown into a multi-service operation that blends sustainability, landscaping, and community-building.
“I realized that I had a skill and experience in composting when others did not, and I could help out those who wanted to be environmentally friendly while reducing waste, and creating something beneficial for the environment,” Sapsford said.
At the heart of the business is its food scrap pickup and composting service, which allows residents, restaurants and businesses to divert waste from landfills and return it to the nutrient cycle. It’s a practical solution with measurable impact. In fact, it has already kept more than 124,000 pounds of food waste out of the landfill.
