U13 AA provincial championship win highlights growth of female hockey in Prince Albert

After a stellar season, the U13 AA Family Pizza Foxes female hockey team was crowned provincial champions this past weekend.

Head Coach Corey Trann said right from the start, the girls bought into learning, working hard and being great teammates.

“All those things together is what makes a great team. We managed to go through a season with only two losses. That includes all of our tournaments, exhibition…and we only had one tie. So, through all our games, we ended up 45-2-1,” he said.

In addition to the provincial title, the team won two Calgary AA tournaments and the home Foxes AA tournament, as well as the North League Final.

“It’s on the backs of the girls. They worked hard. They were driven to compete. They had fun doing it. They always played with a smile on their face. And, they worked for one another. It was really fun to watch.”

The U13 AA Foxes defeated the Regina Rebels at home in Game 1 by a score of 7-1. Game 2 took place in Regina on Saturday. Trann said it was a back-and-forth battle, but eventually the Foxes’ relentless pressure prevailed.

“And that’s one of the theme words for our playoffs: relentless. We played confident and positive and we played relentless, and eventually it wore Regina down, and we ended up winning 5-2 in the final game.”

He said some of the second-year standouts like Danica Finch and Emmerson Palchinski dominated in the last series. Both girls had 12 points each in the playoffs alone. He added goalie Payton Braaten ‘really locked down the net position and really helped secure the win.’

After winning the U18 AA North Championship, the U18 AA Family Pizza Foxes from Prince Albert also competed in the provincial finals this past weekend, but lost 2-1 with 12 seconds left in overtime against the Regina Rebels.

Still, Trann said the success of these local teams show the calibre and the amount of female hockey players in Saskatchewan is growing.

“The talent and the skill level is increasing. The skill level we have in our team this year is amazing and it’s from the work the girls are doing on the ice and off with their own personalized kind of skills work and academies.”

Trann added female hockey is in good shape in locally thanks, in part, to previous players who grew up in the Prince Albert Minor Hockey League and have returned, not just as role models, but as non-parent female coaches.

“Morgan Willoughby, Ally Soyko, and Jordyn Fidler…they all played for the Bears and they’ve been amazing role models for our young women. It’s been just fantastic.”

PRINCE ALBERT PIRATES GAME 2 GOES THURSDAY

While the female AA hockey season has wrapped up for local teams, the U15 AA Prince Albert Venice House Pirates continue their quest for the provincial title.

The team is led by forwards Caleb Philp, Jordan Labelle and Lachlan Vandall, who have a combined 250 points among them this season.

The Pirates travelled to Balgonie on Sunday to play the Prairie Storm – winners of the south division. Game 1 ended in a 5-3 victory for the Pirates. They’ll have home ice advantage for Game 2 which takes place Thursday night at the Lake Country Coop Leisure Centre. Puck drop is set for 7:45 p.m.
