Prince Albert sees three ‘AA’ hockey teams win northern championships

The U15 AA Prince Albert Venice House Pirates swept the Warman Wildcats on Saturday night in front of a packed barn.

There was standing room only at Game 2 between the two top teams in the north at the Kinsmen Arena. Fans included Pirates players from previous seasons who showed their support for the current squad by wearing their old team jerseys.

Kaden Kohle opened the scoring in the first period with a power play goal. Warman answered two minutes later. By the end of the second period, Prince Albert was up 5-3, but the Wildcats put themselves back into the game in the third period, scoring two goals to tie it up with 7:11 on the clock. That stalemate didn’t last long. Jakub Palmer hit the back of the net at 6:16 off an assist from Beckett Casavant on the power play to put the Pirates up by one.

The 6-5 win takes the Pirates to the provincial league final against the Prairie Storm, winners of the south division. Game 1 takes place on Sunday afternoon in Balgonie.

Two female AA hockey teams from Prince Albert are also headed to provincials.

The best of three series between the U18 AA Prince Albert Family Pizza Foxes and the North West Sharks saw the local team travel to North Battleford Sunday night for Game 3.

The Sharks scored first just two minutes into the game, but assistant captain Rylee Jensen got the Foxes on the board at the 5:34 mark of the first period with a power play goal assisted by Steele Zablocki and Naveah Bird-Clarke. Abby McRae put the Foxes up 2-1 in the second period, but the Sharks managed to tie the game in the third period. It was Bird-Clarke who saw the back of the net in overtime, securing the Foxes’ trip to the provincial finals as the Northern SFHL U18AA Champions.

The U13 AA Family Pizza Foxes swept their series against the Saskatoon Comet Fury with 6-1 and 5-1 victories. The U13 squad had an impressive regular season record of 23 wins, two losses, and one tie.

Taylor Briones was the first to score for the Foxes, followed by Emma Trann. While the Fury did manage to tally one point in the first period on a power play effort, the Foxes ran away in the second and third with two goals from Danica Finch and another from Emmerson Palchinski.  

The Foxes will take on the U13 AA SFHL South Champions the Regina Rebels White in the provincial finals. A date for Game 1 has yet to be determined.
