Raiders dominate despite late comeback shootout win over Pats

Friday night, the Prince Albert Raiders played nearly a perfect game and earned an 11-0 win at home over Moose Jaw, and Saturday night the Raiders recreated the effort. Despite dominating all game long, the Raiders never lead and had to pull the goaltender to tie the game, but they still found a way to win 2-1 in a shootout.

The Raiders were firing on all cylinders right away as they came out of the gates. In the first half of the period the Raiders got their only powerplay of the game, and they poured on four shots and hit a post as they hemmed in the Pats for the first 1:25 of the powerplay, but couldn’t find success.

At the other end, former Raider Dayce Cerkatch had his best chance of the game when he got a chance alone in the slot, but Michal Orsulak snapped his glove out for one of his better saves of the night.

After 1: Raiders 0 – 0 Pats, shots 16-7 Raiders overall

The second period saw more of the same, offensive dominance from the Raiders, and a crackdown defensively, but still no reward. Even when the ice opened up with some 4-on-4, neither team could find the back of the net.

In the final three minutes of the period, the Raiders had play going in the offensive zone when play was stopped by a fight behind the play at centre. Matyas Man dropped the gloves with Shea Rollason, and both men engaged in a spirited tilt until Man pinned Rollason up against the glass and the officials broke it up.

After 2: Raiders 0 – 0 Pats, shots 13-4 Raiders, 29-13 Raiders overall

The third period was the most dominant for the Raiders, but also the most confusing. The Raiders poured on the offence so hard that when the Pats finally got their first shot of the period 17:10 into the period, Pats fans cheered. They’d get another reason to cheer 30 seconds later because at the 17:47 mark, Connor Bear snuck the puck out of his zone, spun inside the Raiders blue line to stop and let a trailing Zach Lansard catch up, and Lansard tipped in the backdoor feed to give the Pats the lead.

The Raiders never relented though and went back on the attack the next shift. Still, they had to battle until the final minute of the game when, with the goaltender pulled and a 6-on-5, Braeden Cootes worked the puck down low for Baryden Dube, and he set up a onetimer feed for Max Heise. He blasted it home for his 28th of the season at the 19:09 mark.

After 3: Raiders 1 – 1 Pats, shots 23-2 Raiders, 52-15 Raiders overall

Then in overtime, both exchanged a chance before the Raiders were given just their second penalty of the game with Daxon Rudolph in the box qith 1:45 left. The Raiders managed to kill it off, and that meant it was time for a shootout.

The first round of shooters were stopped at both ends, but then Ben Harvey scored in the second round for the game winner, and Braeden Cootes scored in the third round to put a cap on it for the Raiders.

FINAL (SO): Raiders 2 – 1 Pats, shots 4-1 Pats, 53-17 Raiders overall

The Raiders have Sunday and Monday off before they host the Regina Pats in a rematch on Tuesday.
