Rosthern, Shellbrook to battle in TRHL finals as Hague advances to provincial semifinal

The finals are set in the Twin Rivers Hockey League (TRHL). 

The Rosthern Wheat Kings are set to battle it out with the Shellbrook Elks for the 2026 championship following the wrap up of the best-of-three semifinals over the weekend. 

Rosthern made quick work of the Clavet Cougars with a 3-0 series win, while Shellbrook needed four games to knock off the defending league champion Allan Flames, winning 3-1. 

The Wheat Kings won their series favourably, having never scored less than five goals while giving up no more than three in each of the three games. The final scores were 5-1 in Game 1, 5-2 in Game 2, and 7-3 in Game 3. 

Ben Zultok had eight points (5G-3A) in the series, boosting him to 12 points (8G-4A) in the playoffs so far, which is good enough for second in the league. Behind him with six points each was Brayden Anderson (0G-6A) and Aidan Arnold (2G-4A), and with five was Aaron Campbell (5G-0A) and Branden Scheidl (1G-4A). In goal, Nathan Dancy stood tall in Games 1 and 2, combining for 44 saves to pair with a 1.50 goals against average (GAA) and a .936 save percentage (SV%). Backup Kristjan Johnson took the reins in Game 3, managing 21 saves with a 3.00 GAA and a .875 SV%.

For the Elks, they established a come from behind victory after Allan took Game 1 of their semifinal series 4-3 in overtime. Shellbrook then rallied for three straight wins coming at home and on the road, featuring a 6-3 win in Game 2, a 9-6 victory in Game 3, and a 6-3 triumph in Game 4. 

Through Games 1-3, as the Game 4 stats had yet to be uploaded online, leading playoff goal scorer Cole Dupperreault had seven points (4G-3A). Trailing him with five with Levi Logan (2G-3A), with four was Peyton Kachur (1G-3A) and Matthew Flodell (2G-2A), and tied with three was Rylan Moe (0G-3A), Dallas Galloway (2G-1A), and Nick Martin (0G-3A). Alex Bell was the go to guy in the first three games, making 102 saves to go with a 4.11 GAA and an .887 SV%. 

Between Rosthern and Shellbrook, neither team has won the TRHL championship before since the league was created in 2016. The Wheat Kings have made the finals four times before with their most recent trip in 2024. Meanwhile the Elks, using the Silvertips name, have made the finals twice, most recently in 2022.

Game 1 of the TRHL finals is set for next Friday, March 13, at 8 p.m. from the Rosthern Jubilee Sports Centre. A full playoff bracket can be found by clicking here. 

Royals continue to roll in provincials  

The Hague Royals are into the final four in Saskatchewan senior ‘D’ provincials. 

Hague was dominant in their best-of-three quarterfinal series against Ituna, embarrassing the Avalanche in straight games with identical 10-1 scores in Games 1 and 2. 

With that series now in the rearview, the Royals advance onto the semifinals where they will lineup against the Macklin Mohawks. The Mohawks also won their quarterfinal matchup handedly, downing the Lucky Lake/Beechy Lakers 2-0 with a 6-0 triumph in Game 1 and a 5-1 win in Game 2. Back in Round 2, Macklin defeated the Delisle Bruins 2-0 (5-2, 5-1) and before that, they began their provincial run with a narrow 2-1 first round win over the Meota Combines, winning the series deciding Game 3 by a 5-4 score. 

Hague, on the other hand, defeated the Kelvington Wheat Kings in three games in the opening round, which they followed with another three-game series win over the Birch Hills Blackhawks in Round 2. 

Historically, both the Royals and the Mohawks have raised provincial championship banners in the past. For Hague, their last time was in 1983 when they captured the Senior C title, while Macklin’s most recent time came just two seasons ago in 2024 when they won Senior D. The Mohawks also won the Senior C title in 2009. 

The best-of-three provincial semifinal series between Hague and Macklin gets underway Saturday, March 7 from Macklin at 8 p.m. Game 2 is set for a week later on Saturday, March 14 in Hague at 7:30 p.m., and if necessary, Game 3 will be in Macklin on March 15 at 6 p.m. 

The winner of the series will move on to the finals, where they will face the winner of the other semifinal between the Cupar Canucks and Milestone Flyers.
