A man alleged responsible for causing a multi-vehicle crash in Prince Albert’s downtown area, after fleeing from police, is maintaining his innocence.

By way of his legal aid lawyer, 32-year-old Jonathan Meldrum entered not guilty pleas. The case was discussed Thursday morning at provincial court and a trial date was secured for May 13.

On the afternoon July 2, 2025, police observed a driver who was not wearing a seatbelt, and performed a traffic stop. As the officer began exiting their police vehicle, the driver fled in their SUV at a high rate of speed.

A short time later, the Prince Albert Police Service received a report of a collision.

At the intersection of 15th Street and First Ave. W., the SUV rammed into the side of a westbound vehicle. The impact caused the second vehicle to flip onto its roof, and the driver was taken to hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening in nature.

The driver of the SUV fled on foot but was located and arrested shortly after by Prince Albert police.

In relation to the incident, Meldrum is facing a total of six charges, including flight from police, dangerous driving, operating a conveyance while prohibited from doing so, failing to stop at the scene of an accident, and obstructing a peace officer.

In addition to the Criminal Code charges, Meldrum also has three outstanding tickets from the same incident related to not wearing a seatbelt, driving without a license, and failing to stop at a red light.
