Raiders win second straight East Division title with season sweep of Broncos

With wins in their last three games coming in, the Prince Albert Raiders needed just one point Saturday night to secure a second straight East Division Title as they welcomed the Swift Current Broncos. In the eighth and final matchup between the two teams, the Raiders dominated once more to take a 4-1 win and a sweep of the season series.

The Raiders started the scoring early when their forecheck went to work. At the 5:41 mark, Max Heise brought the puck into the zone on a 2-on-1, but his pass across was blocked. Heise quickly scooped up his own rebound, then passed to the middle for a trailing Maddix McCagherty. He skated in low, then quickly ripped a shot fivehole for his 17th of the year.

Then at 8:58, the Raiders extended their lead on the rush. Brandon Gorzynski took the puck away just inside the right side of the blueline, then sent it a few feet ahead for Aiden Oiring. Gorzynski crashed the goal while Oiring found a great passing lane across to Riley Boychuk, and Boychuk then gave it to Gorzynski through the slot who roofed a wrist shot for his team leading 27th of the year.

On the Raiders first powerplay of the game, they scored again at the 13:25 mark. Max Heise started the play again when he chipped the puck around a defender and into the zone for Brandon Gorzynski, and from the right wall Gorzynski found Aiden Oiring sliding into the slot. Oiring fired a wrist shot, and he’d tie Gorzynski with his team leading 27th goal of the season.

After 1: Raiders 3 – 0 Broncos, shots 19-4 Raiders

At the 5:32 mark of the second, it was time for the Raiders defence to get involved in the scoring. Aiden Oiring would send an exit pass out to centre for Brandon Gorzynski, and he found Linden Burrett streaking through the middle. Burrett cut to his left to make a screen out of the defence, then fired a wrist shot in for his eighth of the season.

From there on out, the period was fairly quiet. The Raiders and Broncos each exchanged powerplays, but neither team could find the net through the rest of the period. The Broncos did put a puck into the net in this period, but it was waved off immediately and confirmed on a replay to have been swatted in by a high stick.

After 2: Raiders 4 – 0 Broncos, shots 15-5 Raiders, 34-9 Raiders overall

Early in the third, the Broncos put on a good push and found a goal at the 3:22 mark. Jayden Oleskiw collected a loose puck behind the Raider goal and sent a hard pass out front to the stick of Carter Moen in tight to the crease, and Moen tipped it past the Raider goaltender before he could react.

For the rest of the period, the Raiders played shut down hockey. The offence came second as the Raiders plugged things up at their own blueline and kept the puck in front of them for the rest of the game, securing the win and the eight game season sweep of the Broncos.

FINAL: Raiders 4 – 1 Broncos, shots 8-4 Raiders, 42-13 Raiders overall

With the win, the Prince Albert Raiders have now secured their second straight East Division championship, and their seventh overall. Last season, it took all the way until the final weekend against the Saskatoon Blades to decide the East Division championship, but this year the Raiders have done it with 11 games still to play.

For the first time this season, the Raiders have two players in the top 20 point scorers in the league. Brandon Gorzynski and Aiden Oiring each had 1G-2A on the night, keeping their stat lines identical at 27G-37A-64P. They sit tied with two other players for 17th in league scoring.

The Raiders now have a full week of rest ahead before they welcome two B.C. Division teams in a row with the Penticton Vees on Friday and the Prince George Cougars on Saturday.
