Vestor the Rescue Dog raises $2,000 for Prince Albert SPCA

Feb 17, 2026 | 4:40 PM

A story about a dog that assists random strangers has come to the aid of the Prince Albert SPCA.

On Tuesday, members of Chokecherry Productions handed over a $2,000 cheque – the proceeds from last month’s Vestor the Rescue Dog shows at the John M. Cuelenaere public library.

SPCA Manager of Operations Ashlee Bober was thrilled with the donation and noted in 2026 they’ve had a large number of medical cases come through the door.

“To be able to have funds like this from our generous community members, it helps us be able to ensure we can give the animals what they’re needing when they come in,” she said.

While it varies month to month, Bober estimated their medical bills alone average $12,000 to $17,000 and this includes both spaying and neutering, vaccines, and other surgeries such as quill removal.

Other animals may require a specific allergy medication.

The production that ran two nights represented the first venture by Chokecherry Productions. Hank Ethier was pleased with the end result.

“We had about 100 people on both nights so for a locally written play we thought that was phenomenal,” he said.

Ethier acknowledged the hard work of the entire cast and specifically George Nolan-Fehr who played “Vestor” and spent the entire play on their knees.

In the coming months, the SPCA has a number of fundraisers planned including an 80s themed dance on March 7 at the Prince Albert Wildlife Banquet and Events Centre; an online auction in April; and a plant sale in May.
