Semifinals set in TRHL as local teams have chance to advance in provincials

Round 1 of the Twin Rivers Hockey League (TRHL) playoffs have came and went, while the second round of senior ‘D’ provincials is set to wrap up this weekend. 

All four of the first-round matchups in the TRHL came via a sweep, with Rosthern toppling Hague, Clavet downing Dalmeny, Allan defeating Bruno, and Shellbrook cruising past Cudworth. 

Rosthern, who won the regular season with the best record, doubled up Hague in both of their first-round contests, winning 5-3 in Game 1 and 4-2 in Game 2. Brayden Anderson led in the points department for the Wheat Kings with five points in the series, while Ben Zultok and Matt Hildebrandt each finished with four. Nathan Dancy and Kristjan Johnson split the series between the pipes, where Dancy had 30 saves in Game 1 and Johnson managed 28 stops in Game 2. For Hague, they had multiple guys with two points but stuck with Nic Jensen in goal for either game, combining for 66 saves. 

With the win, the Wheat Kings advance to the semifinals and will face Clavet, who knocked off Dalmeny in their opening series. Clavet dominated thanks to some stellar goaltending leading them to 7-3 and 3-1 victories. 

Eric Popadynee led the Cougars with five points, followed by Travis Goebel and Devin Morre who each had three. Former WHLer Ethan Chadwick played both games in net and had a staggering 52 saves in Game 1, along with another 29 saves in Game 2. Meanwhile, eight different Sabres found the scoresheet with a single point throughout the series, and Addison Dasiuk made a combined 49 saves in the series.

On the other side of the bracket, the defending league champions in Allan will look to defuse Shellbrook, who has been hot over the last month. 

Allan knocked off Bruno 6-2 in Game 1 and 5-4 in Game 2, led by a league-leading seven-point effort behind Brock Harrison. He had five points alone in Game 2, while Casey Knight had five points across both contests. Brodie Senger, Cam Brossart, and Keith Mitchell weren’t too far behind, each collecting three points and in goal, Robbie Hufnagel had a combined 75 saves. For Bruno, Tristan Hermanson led in points with three, while three others tied with two, and Ryland Pronych turned aside 53 shots across either contest. 

Allan will be joined by Shellbrook in the second round, who took down Cudworth in Round 1 a high scoring series. 

Game 1 needed overtime to decide a winner that saw the Elks prevail by a monster score of 9-8. Game two wasn’t much of a contest as Shellbrook steamrolled their way to a 10-3 win. Regular season leading scorer Cole Dupperreault was his old self across the two games, netting six points while Kaiden Couture and Jody Blais trailed behind with five each. Todd Bazley and Alex Bell both combined for 69 saves in the series. The Trickey Maroons were led on the scoresheet by the Boehm brothers, where both Brett and Dawson had six points each. Either Cudworth netminder saw their fair share of shots, as both Riley Stevenson and Kade Woodrow combined for a whopping 117 saves in Games 1 and 2. 

The schedule for the semifinal matchups in the TRHL have yet to be announced. 

TRHL teams on the cusp of advancing in senior provincials 

The second round of senior ‘D’ provincials got underway last weekend with local teams putting themselves in a great spot to advance onto the quarterfinals. 

Shellbrook continued their winning ways following their Round 1 sweep over Blaine Lake, taking Game 1 at home 5-3 over the Lucky Lake/Beechy Lakers. They can advance with a win on Friday in Game 2 in Lucky Lake. Puck drop is set for 8:30 p.m. 

Meanwhile, Allan had their first taste of provincial action over the weekend after receiving a bye in the first round. They met with the Ituna Avalanche in Round 2 and came away with a dominant 8-3 win in Game 1. The Flames will look to put the nail in the coffin on Saturday in Game 2, which is set for 5 p.m. in Ituna. 

Finally, in the lone all TRHL matchup, Hague holds the upper hand on Birch Hills following their 8-4 win in Game 1. In the only game that had available stats, Darius Sawatzky and Christopher Sawatzky led the Royals to the win with six points each, while Mackenzie Wallace finished with four. Six other Hague players had a point in the win while in goal, Jensen was solid with a 41 save performance.  

For the Blackhawks, Kyle Njaa paved the way with three points, followed by Tyler Tilford, Connor Long, and Tristyn Stevenson who each had two points. Kody Kushniruk and Easton Wolter split duties in net, combining for 34 saves in the loss.  

Game 2 of their series is set for Friday night in Birch Hills at 8:30 p.m.
