Grey Cup coming to town as Raiders welcome Pats

With points in each of their last four games, the Prince Albert Raiders have looked like their usual dominant selves this past weekend with wins over Brandon and Lethbridge. On Tuesday night, the Grey Cup will be in the building as the Raiders welcome the Regina Pats for the sixth of eight total meetings this season.

In the previous five meetings, the Raiders have won four of them, outscoring Regina 30-18. The Raiders won the first two meetings 6-4 in Regina on Sept. 26 and 6-5 in Prince Albert on Oct. 17. The Pats won the third meeting 5-4 on Dec. 17 in Regina, but since then the Raiders have won 9-2 in Prince Albert on Jan. 2, and 5-2 in Regina Jan. 3.

The Raiders remain the only team in the WHL with a playoff spot secured with a record of 39-7-5 (Wins-Losses-Overtime Losses), but still two points behind Everett for the top spot in the league. The Raiders have a five point lead over Medicine Hat for the top spot in the Eastern Conference. The Raiders also have points in their last four games with a 5-2 win over Brandon on Saturday, 6-0 over Lethbridge on Friday, a 5-4 overtime loss to Calgary Wednesday, and their most recent game on the road where the Raiders won 3-1 over Saskatoon.

As for the Pats, they are sitting ninth in the Eastern Conference and three points back of Red Deer for the final playoff spot in the Conference. With a record of 16-25-7, the Pats most recently lost their last two games, 4-3 to Calgary on Saturday, 4-3 in overtime to Saskatoon on Friday, and then an overtime win before that 3-2 over Moose Jaw the previous Sunday that snapped a six-game losing skid.

Looking at special teams, the Raiders went 1/3 in their last outing on the powerplay, but dropped in the standings to fifth at 28.8 per cent. The penalty kill however has stayed put at 77.6 per cent for the 11th place spot in the league.

As for the Pats special teams, their powerplay sits eighth in the league at 26.8 per cent, but has also given up eight shorthanded goals this year. Their penalty kill has not faired as well this year though with a 72.4 per cent success rate, good for 19th in the league.

On to leading scorers, Aiden Oiring has broken away at the top of the Raiders scoring, leading the team in both points and goals with 26G-33A-59P. Daxon Rudolph is right behind him with 22G-35A-57P, then Brandon Gorzynski in third with 23G-33A-56P, and finally Max Heise rounds out the top four with 24G-26A-50P.

Scoring streaks:

  • Braeden Cootes has 4G-4A in his last four games
  • Aiden Oiring has 5G-0A in his last four games
  • Ben Harvey has 2G-2A in his last four games
  • Connor Howe has 1G-2A in his last three games
    • Evan Smith, who centres the line between Harvey and Howe, had his streak broken up, but still has 0G-3A in the last four games. Together, the line of Howe-Smith-Harvey has a combined 3G-7A in the last four games
  • Brandon Gorzynski has 0G-3A in his last three games
  • Jonah Sivertson has 0G-4A in the last two games
  • Alisher Sarkenov has 2G-1A in his last two games
  • Benett Kelly has 2G-0A in the last two games. Each goal he’s scored has opened the scoring

As for the Pats, there’s a tie for the top spot between Keets Fawcett with 25G-18A-43P and Caden Brown with 22G-21A-43P. Sitting third is Zach Lansard with 17G-23A-40P, and fourth is Ephram McNutt with 9G-26A-35P.

Scoring streaks

Despite two straight scores of 4-3, the Pats do not have an active scoring streak on their roster. Both Maddox Schultz (if he dresses) and Connor Bear are coming into the game with 1G-1A in their last game.

Finally on to the goaltending matchup, the Raiders have their starting goaltender back in Michal Orsulak, who earned the win Saturday night after missing four games. Orsulak has a record of 17-4-3, a 0.900 save percentage, and a second in the league goals against average of 2.43, and two shutouts on the year.

Steele Bass played the four games in Orsulak’s absence, bringing him to a 9-1-1 record, a 0.912 save percentage, a 1.72 goals against average, and two shutouts on the year.

As for the Pats, they have run three goaltenders for a majority of the year. Marek Schlenker has the last four starts and the majority on the season. His record sits at 10-14-6, a 0.889 save percentage, a 3.65 goals against average, and a shutout on the year.

From there it’s been a split between Taylor Tabashniuk and Matthew Hutchison. Tabashniuk has less games but has backed up the last four games in a row. Tabahniuk has a 4-4-0 record, a 0.878 save percentage, and a 3.48 goals against average.

Hutchison has not appeared since Jan. 2, but has a record of 7-11-0, one shutout, a 0.864 save percentage, and a 4.68 goals against average.
