Monty Bonspiel sells out for seventh straight year

The Prince Albert Golf & Curling Club is set to host a popular annual fundraiser this Saturday.

The Mont St. Joseph Home and Foundation Monty Mixed Curling FunSpiel is sold out. The event aims to raise money for improvements and renovations in the long-term care facility, and give people an opportunity to try a new sport.

“It is the most incredible day, it’s one of our favourites,” explained Director of Foundation Development Jessica Gale.

“We have been sold out at capacity for weeks already. It’s a one-day event and the people that come don’t have to have any curling experience. We’ve got folks from as young as four going all the way to 90, I think, coming and spending the day with us.”

This year marks the seventh consecutive event that has been sold out, with 32 teams featuring nearly 130 participants. Teams also dress up in costumes or in themes for the day, making the event just that much more fun.

Like the past few years, funds raised from the event are going towards upgrades at the home to improve their kitchen and overall dining experience for residents. Gale said there are 12 total areas that need a facelift with two already complete, adding they’re looking to raise $200,000 this year to push this portion of the renovations across the finish line.

“We’re creating new island spaces, new eating and dining spaces in there, installing new pantries, new refrigerators, those kinds of things. It’s making it way more functional, way more homey, and much more accommodating for our residents.”

On top of the fun, an online auction is running alongside the bonspiel that features nearly 100 items. Bidding opened at 8 a.m. on Thursday and will close on Sunday at 6 p.m.

The bonspiel begins on Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. and will wrap later that same day.
