Northern Bears feeling the rhythm after three straight wins

The Mann-Northway Northern Bears have found their groove after winning their last three games over the past four days.  

Prince Albert hosted the Notre Dame Hounds over the weekend for a pair of contests that ended in favour of the Bears, 5-1 on Saturday and 7-5 on Sunday. The team then followed that up with a monster win on the road, blanking the defending provincial champion Saskatoon Stars 6-0 on Tuesday. Following the successful end to the month, the Northern Bears are now 7-12-2-3 (W-L-OTW-OTL) on the campaign. 

On Saturday, the score remained deadlocked at zero until Addison Davidge managed to break the ice for P.A. in the second period while on the power play. That was quickly followed by another marker from Shelby Booy and a second power play goal from Andie Marshall. The Hounds did get on the board later in the frame, as Claire Abrametz potted her own power play tally to make it 3-1. 

In the third, it was all Black and Orange as Aidyn Konechny and Londyn Hoffman each found the back of the net to help the Bears prevail, 5-1. Maggie Schell picked up the win in goal, making 19 saves. 

Prince Albert and Notre Dame rematched on Sunday afternoon which began much like the game before. The Bears jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first period with goals from Konechny, Olivia Trann, Gracie Reed, and Rowan Clement. The pile on continued in the second as the two traded goals, beginning with Hoffman’s second of the weekend, Emma Christison’s second of the season, and Konechny’s second of the game, as it was now 7-3 entering the final frame.

There, P.A.’s goal parade was stopped as the Hounds offence continued to rumble early in the period with Brynn Hanna and Ayla Klus scoring less than 20 seconds apart to dig into the lead. However, netminder Avery Brunen remained sharp the rest of the period as she turned aside the other 15 shots in the frame to hang on for the 7-5 win. She would finish with 24 saves in the game.  

Following the winning weekend, the Bears trekked south to Saskatoon’s Merlis Belsher Place for a Tuesday date with the Stars, the defending provincial champions. Despite the daunting title, Prince Albert made Saskatoon see the stars in just their second meeting of the season, hanging half a dozen goals on their Highway 11 rivals.  

The Bears correlated their goals with what period they were in, scoring one in the first, two in the second and three in the third. Marshall had two goals in the game, while Hoffman, Davidge, Reyn Siklenka, and Zoey Krienke also lit the lamp. Hoffman also had a pair of assists, while Jersie Andersen led the way with three assists. Brunen was a wall between the pipes, stopping all 46 shots she faced for her second shutout this season in the 6-0 win. 

Prince Albert now turns their focus to this weekend as they gear up to host Saskatoon for back-to-back games on Saturday and Sunday. Puck drop for both of those games is set for 1:30 p.m. at the Art Hauser Centre.
