Northern Saskatchewan students named to provincial post-secondary council

Students from northern Saskatchewan, including Prince Albert, La Ronge and North Battleford, have been named to the 2025–26 Saskatchewan Post-Secondary Student Council.

The 24-member council advises the provincial government on issues affecting post-secondary students, including affordability, accessibility and the overall student experience. Members come from communities across Saskatchewan and represent a range of academic programs.

Among those selected from the north are Neha Saxena of Prince Albert, Savannah Lavallee of La Ronge and Irvin John Applegarth of North Battleford. The group also includes students from Regina, Saskatoon, Moose Jaw and several rural communities.

Advanced Education Minister Ken Cheveldayoff said the council allows students to directly inform government decision-making around post-secondary education.

“I sincerely congratulate this year’s outstanding council members who represent Saskatchewan’s diverse communities,” Cheveldayoff said in a statement. “I look forward to hearing their feedback as we work to ensure post-secondary education supports students and aligns with Saskatchewan’s growth plan.”

Returning council member Ashley Lafontaine, a second-year student at the Gabriel Dumont Institute, said participation on the council has given her the opportunity to connect with students from across the province.

“It has been both meaningful and impactful, connecting me with students across Saskatchewan and giving me a platform to contribute to important conversations about funding, accessibility and the student experience,” Lafontaine said.

According to the Ministry of Advanced Education, the council reflects Saskatchewan’s diversity, including Indigenous students, gender and sexually diverse students, persons with disabilities and visible minorities.

This marks the third year of the Saskatchewan Post-Secondary Student Council. Members are expected to take part in their first official discussion later this week.
