Foxes female hockey tournament celebrates 25 years with record turnout

The numbers are impressive.

A female hockey tournament in the city celebrated its 25^th anniversary with 74 teams and 152 games played this past weekend.

Prince Albert Foxes Tournament coordinator Jim Flynn has spent more than a decade watching the event grow into what it is today. He said a lot of it is word of mouth from teams who have participated in the past.

“Right when it first started there was one P.A. team and five outside teams from the local area and it grew from there,” said Flynn. “We did get some really good feedback from the teams that the tournament was well run, and they were very happy with how the organization ran the tournament, and the officiating was great and they really enjoyed the new rink. The ones that played out of it, they thought it was really nice to have a facility like that in this size of a town.”

Every rink in Prince Albert, plus the Northern Regional Rec Centre, was used to accommodate teams from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba in the U9 to U18 AA categories. The event is also an opportunity for some of the older players to showcase their talents to potential scouts. Flynn said a number of Foxes teams saw success. The U13 AA Foxes were A-side champions following a 4-0 win over the Regina Rebels. The U18A Prince Albert Beachcomber Foxes captured the A-side final with a 6-3 win over the Saskatoon Comet Predators, while the U18 AA Family Pizza Foxes won the B Side final. Kylie Huet and Rylee Jensen received ‘Player of the Game’ honours.

Flynn expects the economic impact on the city to be significant considering the number of people the event brought to Prince Albert; all of the hotels in town were booked. Vicky McCallum, whose daughter plays on the U18 A team, won the 50/50. Her take-home was more than $37,000. There was even a shoutout about the Foxes tournament on Hockey Night in Canada. Three-time Olympic gold medalist and Sportsnet broadcaster Jennifer Botterill was the guest speaker at the opening banquet Thursday night and made mention of it during her broadcast over the weekend.

Several teams also took in WHL action while in the city. The Prince Albert Raiders held a ceremonial puck drop prior to Friday’s game and recognized Flynn and Luc Robin, who started the tournament 25 years ago.
