Prince Albert drug trafficker handed seven year sentence

Jan 2, 2026 | 4:06 PM

A man charged after a near one-month-long drug trafficking investigation has received a seven-year prison sentence.

Tyson Tobey’s appearance Friday afternoon at Prince Albert Provincial Court came over a month-and-a-half after a separate hearing where guilty pleas were entered to two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, two counts of possession of a restricted firearm, and breach of a previous order.

According to facts read by prosecutor Brent Slobodian, the case dates back to April 2025, when the Crime Reduction Team was informed Tobey was trafficking cocaine and meth, and was also in possession of firearms.

During their investigation and surveillance, officers observed Tobey conducting short-duration visits at a number of different locations in Prince Albert, including the Canadian Tire parking lot, Gateway Mall parking lot, and at the parking lot in Northside.

In May 2025, Tobey was subsequently arrested at a cannabis business in Northside. Inside his vehicle, police found over 200 grams of meth and a scale.

Further investigation led to a Controlled Drug and Substances Act search warrant being executed at a residence in Prince Albert’s midtown neighbourhood.

One vehicle was seized, as well as 725 grams of methamphetamine, 111 grams of cocaine, 32 grams of cocaine buff, $2,470 in Canadian currency, six firearms, a flashlight Conducted Energy Weapon, two sets of brass knuckles, assorted ammunition, two air pistols, two crossbows and a digital scale.

Slobodian mentioned Tobey’s criminal record included prior convictions for gun-related offences and drug possession, but nothing for trafficking.

Following his initial arrest, Tobey was in custody for about 28 days before being released on bail. The next month he was re-arrested by Prince Albert RCMP. A traffic stop in the Redwing area led to the seizure of about 64 grams of meth, cash and drug trafficking paraphernalia.

Tobey was subsequently charged with possession of the proceeds of crime, possession for the purpose of trafficking and two counts of failing to comply with a release order. However, at the conclusion of Friday’s sentencing hearing, the charges were dropped.

Slobodian told paNOW it was the result of the resolution discussions that had occurred between himself and defence lawyer Evan Strelioff.

With a remand credit of 285 days, Tobey has about six years and two months left to serve. He’ll then be subject to a lifetime firearms ban.

When provided the opportunity in court to speak, he declined.
