One dead, three injured as police look for armed suspects near Big Island Lake Cree Nation

Dec 30, 2025 | 11:59 AM

One person has been confirmed dead and three others injured on Big Island Lake Cree Nation.

RCMP issued an update on an ongoing situation in the community as they continue to hunt for two armed suspects.

Pierceland RCMP were dispatched to the community about 6 a.m. on Dec. 30 to a reported shooting. There, they found the victims and said they do not have further details as to the level of injuries or care required by the survivors.

The Saskatchewan Coroner’s Office is working with police to identify the deceased person, while investigators are trying to determine if the shooting was random or targeted.

Two suspects, armed with a gun, fled on an ATV and the community remains locked down as the search continues. Residents are being reminded not to post police locations, to stay inside, and to make sure their doors are locked. Travellers are being told to avoid the area as well.

Updates to the emergency alert are available on the Sask Alert website.

So far, there is no evidence that this incident is connected to an armed robbery in Maidstone on Dec. 28. Both incidents remain under investigation.
