She is also survived by two sisters-in-law: Julia Fjeld and June Hoiland, and many nieces and nephews.
Bernice was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Cecil, on October 27, 2015; her parents Martha and Torvald Hoiland; her brothers and sister Peder (Lois) Hoiland, Irvin (Ilene) Hoiland, Ruth (Jim Dodds) and Arthur Hoiland. She was also predeceased by her brothers- and sisters-in-law: Ida (Robert) Brown, Albert (Nellie), Edwin (Velma), Art (Marj), Andrew (Evelyn), Ruth (Einar) Rude, Norman, and Allan.
Mom was born on January 10, 1928 in Birch Hills, SK. She grew up on a farm 4 miles east of Birch Hills with her three brothers, Peder, Irvin and Arthur, and her treasured only sister, Ruth. Her parents had emigrated from Norway, so until the children started school, only Norwegian was spoken in the home. From a young age Mom preferred inside chores as opposed to outside chores, and Grandma Hoiland taught her well, as she was an excellent cook and baker. She attended school in Birch Hills, leaving after Grade 11 to work as a mother’s helper for families in the area. She married Cecil Fjeld of the Winton district on October 27, 1950, and they started their life together on two quarters of land one-half mile south of the farm where Cecil had grown up. She was a busy farm wife with a large garden, always having shelves of quart sealers full of preserves and a cold room in the basement full of vegetables to last through the winter. As well, she was often called upon to assist Dad with farm work in busy times, such as milking cows, driving the grain truck in a pinch, or running grain samples to the elevator to be tested. She was an accomplished seamstress, sewing graduation dresses, bridesmaid dresses, clothing for children and grandchildren, doll clothes, and quilts for her family. She was a busy knitter as well, supplying us with layette sets for grandchildren, cozy sweaters and warm mittens. Mom was a dedicated member of the Winton Ladies Club and the Lake Park Ladies Aid. In later years, she kept busy every Monday afternoon with her Lake Park friends piecing quilts for Lutheran World Relief.
Mom and Dad sold the farm and moved into Birch Hills in 1995. They enjoyed the social aspect of being in town after having lived 12 miles from town prior to that. There was always fresh baking to go with coffee, and she could whip up a quick lunch using her delicious homemade buns for any unexpected company. During their retirement years, they enjoyed their annual camping trips with their friends, casino bus tours, vacations in Arizona, and a memorable trip up the Alaska Highway. They moved to Tamarack Villas in Prince Albert in 2011. Mom continued to reside there after Dad’s passing in 2015, until 2019 when she moved to Abbeyfield House. In the fall of 2024 it was evident she needed more assistance. After 6 months of Val and Clarence’s loving care in their Prince Albert home, she moved to Wheatland Lodge in Leask, until her final move to Birchview Home in Birch Hills, where she resided until her passing. The family would like to thank the staff at both Wheatland Lodge and Birchview Home for their excellent care.
In lieu of flowers, donations gratefully accepted to Abbeyfield House, 190 – 26th Street East, Prince Albert, SK S6V 1Z7 or Birchview Auxiliary, Box 578, Birch Hills, SK S0J 0G0
Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, November 27 at 1:00 p.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church, 1796 – 15th Avenue East, Prince Albert, SK. For live-stream viewing, please visit the Youtube page of Messiah Lutheran Church, Prince Albert.
