The family of Ramona Schoettler are deeply saddened to announce her peaceful passing on Nov 9, 2025 at St. Paul’s Hospital, Saskatoon, surrounded by her loving family.
Ramona was born at home in Romance, Sk on Dec 8, 1937 to George and Louise Pitka, the eldest of three children. It was from her family that Ramona inherited her love of family, cooking, gardening, spending time outdoors, farming and travelling. Ramona attended Early Dawn School and remained in Romance helping with the family farm and post office.
On Aug 15, 1960 Ramona married Clem Schoettler. The first few years were spent in a trailer following Clem’s work. In September 1963 Clem and Ramona settled in Spruce Home, their forever home. Ramona and Clem worked side by side in everything they did. Ramona was his right hand whether repairing a telephone line, harvesting grain or building a coffee table. Ramona took great pride in her garden, preserving, freezing or supplying the neighbors with the excess. The door was always open and coffee was always on. Coffee was never complete without fresh baking. The girls regularly came home from school to the aroma of freshly baked bread and a special treat of hot dough babies (fried bread).
Following Clem’s retirement Ramona worked at Denysuik Greenhouse in the spring, where she nurtured and transplanted bedding plants while bonding with fellow staff and customers. Ramona also found friendship and camaraderie with the Spruce Home Seniors. Even though she disliked cards, she rarely missed a Wednesday afternoon of friendship and fun.
Evenings, weekends, and holidays were spent “going for a drive”, travelling, camping, fishing or visiting with family and friends. Ramona continued to enjoy travelling, having visited every province in Canada, several locations in the United States, Germany and Greece. She took her final drive with Cheryl on Thanksgiving when they travelled to Melfort and Watson to visit family.
In August 2023 Ramona retired to Saskatoon to be close to family and her beloved grandchildren. Her grandchildren were a source of great pride and joy; she loved nothing more than watching and listening to Emilee perform. Ramona and Nicholas found common ground in their love for camping, fishing and campfires.
Ramona is survived by her daughters, Barb (Ken Kowaliuk) and Cheryl Schoettler, her grandchildren Emilee and Nicholas Kowaiuk, her sister Clementine (Jerry DeSchyver), sisters in law, Pat Pitka and Jeanette Schoettler, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, and her sweet little cat and constant companion, Bobsi,
Funeral service for Ramona will be held on Monday Nov 17, at 11:00am at Sacred Heart Cathedral. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ramona’s memory to the Children’s Wish Foundation.
Arrangements in the care of Mackenzie Funeral Chapel, Mark & Pedro Gyoerick, Mel & Troy Curle, & Jordyn Jacobson. 306 763 8488.
