Shirley Elaine Hasting, 83, made her journey to Heaven on October 30, 2025, after a courageous battle with dementia.
Shirley was born on December 21, 1941, in Bagley, SK, to Thomas and Clara Anderson. Shirley was the youngest of 12 children and the last surviving sibling. As a child, Shirley and her family lived on their farm in Bagley before eventually moving to Melfort, SK. Both of Shirley’s parents were born in the USA, and in her adulthood, Shirley applied for American citizenship. She was immensely proud of being granted dual citizenship.
When Shirley was in her mid-teens, both her parents sadly passed away. Upon the passing of her parents, Shirley moved to Prince Albert to live with her sister Ila. From there, she made the move to BC. The decision to move to BC led Shirley to one of the happiest times in her life. Throughout her life, Shirley shared her many stories with family and friends about BC and all the wonderful people she had met and places she had lived. To her, BC was a magical place. It was while in BC that Shirley met her one and only, and husband-to-be, Garrett Leigh Hastings. On October 29, 1966, Shirley and Gary married in Richmond, BC. Gary’s career was with the RCMP, and it was through this that Shirley and Gary had the opportunity to live in various places within BC. While in BC, Shirley and Gary welcomed their first child, Mia Leigh Hastings, on July 20, 1970, in Nanaimo, BC.
In 1972, Gary was transferred back to Saskatchewan to instruct at the RCMP Depot in Regina, SK. This move brought both Gary and Shirley closer to their families, as Gary was born and raised in Birch Hills, SK. While in Regina, they welcomed their second daughter, Jodi Lynne Hastings, on January 2, 1974. Their hearts were indelibly broken on May 1, 1974, when their beloved Jodi passed away.
After Regina, Shirley, and Gary lived in various communities within Saskatchewan. The community of Wakaw was particularly special for them. Their last move was to Prince Albert, SK. While there, Shirley worked until retirement at the Liquor Board Store. Shirley absolutely loved her time there and all the people she met there. It absolutely made her day to chat, laugh and joke with her fellow co-workers and the customers that came through the doors.
Laughing and joking were truly her passions. Anyone who knew Shirley knew how fun she was to be around! However, her biggest passion and love was being a mother to Mia and a grandmother to her granddaughter, Samantha and her grandson, August. Her love for them was immense, and she could always be counted on for numerous hugs, kisses, and always saying “I love you.” Shirley was also known for her kindness. She had a firm belief in sharing with those less fortunate and in passing it forward to others.
Shirley also loved to spend time with her brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews, as well as all of her in-laws. Much of her time spent with them was while up at Candle Lake. When at Candle Lake, Shirley always made sure to have a cold beer to share and was able to whip up a meal on short notice for visitors and family that might drop by.
In October, 2022, Shirley moved to Birch View Care Home, Birch Hills, SK. Even though she was in the later stages of dementia, Shirley flourished there due to the incredible care and love shown to her by each and every staff member. They are truly angels on earth, and Shirley’s family can’t thank them enough. Shirley’s last move, on October 30th, was to the house of God. She now resides where she is reunited with her baby Jodi, along with deceased family members and friends.
Shirley is survived by her daughter Mia (Terry), grandson August, granddaughter Samantha (Conrad), great-grandchildren Cash and Finn and her greatest friend and support, Gary.
Shirley is predeceased by her infant daughter, Jodi, and her parents, Tom and Clara Anderson. Brothers Norris, Teddy, Raymond, Roy and Lloyd. Sisters Ida, Nora, Ila, Mary, Vernie and Myrtle.
In memory of Shirley, memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada or Birch Hills Ladies Auxiliary.
