Raiders finish road trip with dramatic overtime comeback in Brandon

Sep 27, 2025 | 9:38 PM

After starting to road trip with a win in Regina, the Prince Albert Raiders headed to Brandon for the final of three road games in a row, this time against the Wheat Kings. The Raiders took the first lead, but still had to come back from a two goal deficit before earning the win 5-4 in overtime.

At the 7:38 mark of the first period, the Raiders got on the board first when Harrison Lodewyk carried the puck down the left wall and sent a pass across for Evan Smith. His first shot was denied, but Smith stopped on the goal line to get a whack at the rebound for his first of the season.

The Wheat Kings tied it up at the 11:11 mark on a 3-on-1, and Luke Mistelbacher sent a nice pass behind the Raiders defence for Jaxson Jacobson, and on the partial breakaway he managed to tuck the puck home on a backhand over Michal Orsulak’s blocker.

At 15:54, the Raiders scored again thanks to the Lodewyk and Smith connection. First Lodewyk won a puck battle at the left side of centre to play it into the Wheat Kings zone, and then he chased after the puck into the slot where he won another puck battle. Lodewyk turned around, then passed the puck to Smith while backing up towards the right of the goal. Smith quickly returned the puck to Lodewyk, who blasted the onetimer into the back of the net for his first of the season.

Linden Burrett was called for roughing at the end of the first period, and that gave the Wheat Kings a powerplay to start the second. It took 34 seconds for the Wheat Kings to find the back of the net. Chase Surkan was set up for a onetimer across the slot, and Michal Orsulak dove across with an outstretched paddle to make a save of the year candidate, but unfortunately the puck knuckled as it fell to the ice and across the goal line.

The Wheat Kings continued the pressure through the second period with a goal off a faceoff at the 11:59 mark. The play started with a tie-up on the faceoff dot, and the pile moved towards the slot before the puck came loose to Nicholas Johnson who swung a backhanded slapshot towards the goal and into the back of the net.

Then at 13:22, the Wheat Kings took a two goal lead when Joby Baumuller took a shot that missed the next wide, but he followed the puck as it rebounded off the back wall, and one touch passed it into the middle where Surkan was waiting to score his second of the night.

At the end of the period, the buzzer had gone when Grayson Burzinski ran Riley Boychuk into the boards from behind with a crosscheck to the back of the neck. Boychuk continued to play in the third, and Buryzinski was ejected with a five minute major.

After 2: Raiders 2 – 4 Wheat Kings, shots 16-11 Raiders, 30-22 Raiders overall

The Raiders got set up early on the five minute major, but failed to score with the first unit. While lines were changing, the Wheat Kings were able to clear the zone and kept clearing the zone through the middle three minutes. In the final minute of the powerplay, the Raiders got set up again, but altogether they were held off the scoresheet, meaning the Raiders comeback had to happen 5-on-5.

At the 8:31 mark of the period, Ben Harvey found Hubert Clarke at the left point, and Clarke blasted a hard shot that was blocked, but it came to Ty Meunier. With Wheat Kings goaltender and Prince Albert local Jaydon Kraus committed to stopping the shot from Clarke, Meunier had a wide open cage to hit for his second of the season.

With less than three minutes left in the game, the Raiders got their final powerplay of the game when Aiden Oiring was hauled down in the offensive zone. With that powerplay, Riley Boychuk set up Daxon Rudolph for a hard shot from the point. That was stopped, but Max Heise in front collected the rebound and quickly wrapped around the opposite side of the net to tuck it home at tie the game at 17:55 with his second of the season and second in as many games.

After 3: Raiders 4 – 4 Wheat Kings, shots 14-8 Raiders, 44-30 Raiders overall

In overtime, the Wheat Kings won the initial possession, but as they attacked on the rush they stepped offside and caused a faceoff outside the Raiders zone. The puck end up in the Wheat Kings zone after that faceoff, and Aiden Oiring went chasing after a Wheat Kings defenceman in the corner, but the defender blew a tire and fell to the ice. Oiring took the puck behind the net and came out on the right wing looking like he was searching for a pass, but instead he fired the puck short side to beat Kraus’ glove just 57 seconds into overtime.

FINAL (OT): Raiders 5 – 4 Wheat Kings, shots 1-0 Raiders, 45-30 Raiders overall

Oiring’s overtime winner is his third goal of the season, and his fourth straight night with a point to start the season. He and linemate Brayden Dube both lead the Raiders in scoring with 3G-2A on the season, but Dube had his three game streak broken in Brandon.

Michal Orsulak is the first goaltender for the Raiders to play two games this season, and he stopped 26 of 30 for a 0.866 save percentage on the night.

The Raiders have a whole week off before they start a six game homestand that starts on Saturday, October 4 where the Raiders play host to the Red Deer Rebels.
