Hundreds gather to remember Chrystal Rivet

Hundreds gathered in the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Prince Albert on Wednesday afternoon to remember Chrystal Rivet.

Among the many who attended were her co-workers from the Children’s Choice Daycare. A woman speaking on their behalf told onlookers she worked with Rivet for more than eight years.

She said Rivet touched the lives of each child she worked with and everyone who worked with her.

Rivet was also remembered by her friend and eulogist Jeremy Jordison, her “Jere-bear”, who said the children she worked with looked forward to being with her. She loved children, he said, and they loved her, calling her “Chachi” and “Tittle”.

The expectant mother had recently bought a new home and worked two jobs, but made time for everyone, he said. He said that she lived more in 30 years than most do in a lifetime, and although she was never the loud one in the room, everyone knew that she was there.

Jordison described Rivet’s love for her companion, Shane, whom he said Rivet would drive miles to see.

A woman who would do karaoke on the spot and loved cooking, she had an infectious smile, he said.

As Jordison wished his friend well on her journey, he broke down but continued on, telling her he loved her.

Rivet was also remembered in photos – with a slideshow of photos of her from birth to adulthood – and in music. An accompanist performed an acoustic version of “Time After Time,” and one of Rivet’s childhood favourites, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”

As a girl, the celebrant, Father Maurice Fiolleau said, she loved The Wizard of Oz.

At the end of the ceremony, as the mourners who attended the two-hour service were preparing to file out, her visibly shaken father Claude was comforted by another person as he followed a uniformed Prince Albert Police officer carrying a dark urn.

Most of the people who gathered at the cathedral were young people, Fiolleau remarked, in the same age group as Rivet.

The 30-year-old died last Thursday morning following a traffic collision at Sixth Avenue and 28th Street East.
