In loving Memory of Patrick Moan
Pat took a windy and colourful road through life — one marked by gentle curves, some ruts and more than a few hairpin turns. On June 8th, 2025, Pat took one last turn and landed in a spot, that had always been reserved for him, in heaven.
Born in Kelowna in 1946, Pat’s early years were spent bouncing between BC, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. Life wasn’t always easy for Pat or his siblings during those years. Not surprisingly, getting his basic needs met was something he often took into his own hands; therefore, as a rebellious youth, he had more than a few run-ins with the law. With great humour, he would tell those hairpin stories with his last one, ending at the age of twenty. That last story topped them all off, with a stolen RCMP cruiser plus a case of beer by his side and a high speed chase; he would gleefully admit he eventually had to pull over to the side of the road and let the RCMP catch up and then peacefully arrest him.
Surprisingly, just a few years later, with an expunged juvenile record; Pat would begin an abundantly fulfilling career as a Correctional Officer. He was honoured with the Governor General’s Award for 30 years of exemplary service. In addition to the camaraderie he shared with fellow guards, Pat had a unique ability to truly connect with and support the inmates who were there to be rehabilitated.
At 22, looking like his idol James Dean, Pat met beautiful Hertha. They bonded over a shared love of competitive card games and her instant affection for his rambunctious family. They settled in Prince Albert and were wed in 1970. Both wanting a family of their own to love they welcomed three daughters —Alisa, Patricia and Shari or as Pat called them, his “three suns.” Though divorced after 17 years, Pat and Hertha maintained a friendship until her passing in 2016. He took great pride in providing for his family and truly valued zillions of hours spent with them all, playing board, card and fun games. He also treasured moments spent taking his girls fishing and attending Raiders games and of course playing tricks on them. His competitive side had him loving to be one up! We all remember well the Valentine’s Day he wanted to make extra special. He suggested we all draw a name out of a hat, KEEP THAT NAME SECRET and buy that person something they would love. Having gone to the mall together and bursting with excitement for the special gift we had found I can’t recall which one of us couldn’t hold the secret and the gig was up – he had put his name in the hat 5 times!!!
Pat will be best remembered for his sense of humour and his magnanimous charisma. He loved animals and the wonder of nature and the universe beyond what could be seen. He was a walking National Geographic and could spark a conversation with just about anyone. He was a die-hard Edmonton Eskimos/Elks fan, literally almost to the death of him last season!
Proven to never give up he presented an unexpected twist, at 78 and moved to Calgary to be closer to family. He quickly became part of the vibrant community at Trinity Retirement Residence, where he formed friendships among residents and staff alike. During this year he also formed (within himself) a creative establishment he named the AAA club. Pat shared that throughout his entire life he had always known that God was with him, but that now he felt that love in a profound way — and wanted nothing more than to share it with others. The “AAA Club,” was about practicing Awareness, Acceptance, and Acknowledgement, and he truly embraced each moment with new presence and purpose.
Pat spent his final weeks surrounded by the family whom he loved with his whole heart. His spirit will live on in his daughters Alisa, Patricia (Bruce) and Shari; his grandchildren Darren, Jordan, Amy, Josh, Joey, Gabriella; great grandchildren Ava and Paisley; his sister Sandy and his brother of the heart Ken. A wonderful reunion has taken place with his parents Flo and Jim, his brothers Larry and Bruce, his sister Nadine and his friend Hertha … all in the presence of the God who loves us all.
A celebration of life will be held at 3pm on June 25th at MacKenzie Funeral Chapel (130 9 St East, PA).
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Trinity Lodge for the love, care and fun Pat received in his final year.
