Back to School Safety
On Tuesday, September 1, students and teachers head back to school.
School buses will be moving hundreds of children to school and many after-school activities begin. This is an exciting time for families: a busy time on the roads with vacations ending and school back in session and a whole new experience for our youngest students so we wanted to (1) remind motorists, parents and children to stay safe, and (2) to share some tips for those who are new to school or may be out of practice. Most people do take care – but it never hurts to have that reminder.
Tips for Motorists
- Give yourself plenty of extra time to arrive
- Be aware of school zone signage, and slowdown in school zones
- Be ready to stop at all times. Children do not always notice oncoming traffic
- Try to make eye contact with children waiting to cross the road
- Be patient and allow children to complete their crossing before proceeding
- Stop when directed to do so by a crossing guard
