Adolph Bernhard Benson was born on January 26, 1926, in Caulder, Saskatchewan. He was one of nine children, with three brothers and five sisters. Later that year, the Benson family moved north, making short stops in Leask and Parkside before eventually settling in the Boro Green District, south of Canwood.
Adolph received his education at Bramshott and Boro Green schools. As a young man, he worked in various logging camps across Ontario and Big River, Saskatchewan, before finding his true calling in farming.
On June 9, 1951, Adolph married Esther Thall – the beginning of a loving marriage that spanned nearly 74 years. Together, they established a small family farm on the original Benson homestead in the Boro Green District, where they raised three sons.
Adolph had a passion for life and a wide range of interests. He enjoyed playing cards, dancing, fishing, hunting, walking, cheering on the Blue Jays, curling, and golfing. He was a well-known presence at “coffee row” and spent countless hours at the local rinks and golf course. He had Esther bonspieled and golfed together on the senior circuit throughout the area, making many lasting friendships along the way.
Some of Adolph’s most cherished moments were the simple ones – countless hours spent around the kitchen table with his grandchildren, playing cards, sharing cookies, telling jokes, and enjoying each other’s company. Watching them compete in the sports he loved and taking them fishing were among his greatest joys.
Adolph lived a good, long life and will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the community he was such a meaningful part of.
“I Farmed The Land – I farmed the land, I tramped the wood, These are things I understood. No grand schemes, they passed me by. I knew the brook, the hills, the sky. To hunt a bird, to wet the line. Gifts from God, so good and fine. Friends and kin, I loved them so. Although I’m gone, I’m sure they know. I’m now at peace, life’s battle done, I’ve faced the foe, And I have won.”
Adolph is lovingly remembered by his wife Esther; son Brian (Kathy) their family Chad (Melanie) Benson and their children Kelsey (Tim) Morris and children Oliver & Ellie; and Ashley Benson; Jason Benson and his son Draeson Benson; Lorne (Lorraine) and their family Leah (Tyler) Kluz and their children Logan & Adam; Rhett Benson; Dale (Louise) and their family Vada & Zane Benson; April (Brett) Franks and their children Minah, Hadley, & Naomi; Paige (Braydon) Chalifour and their children Cyrus & Flora; his sisters-in-law Ann LaBounty and Clara Stanhope.
