A Prince Albert hockey player in the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) will be donning some new colours come next game.

On Thursday, it was announced that Toronto Sceptres forward and P.A.’s own Kaitlin Willoughby was traded to the Montreal Victoire in exchange for defender Anna Kjellbin. The trade was the only one completed before the PWHL’s Trade Deadline at noon on Thursday.

“Kaitlin’s arrival allows us to add even more depth to our squad,” said Montreal General Manager Danièle Sauvageau.

Willoughby is a two-year veteran of the PWHL, joining Toronto on a free agent invite in the league’s inaugural season before signing a one-year extension with the Sceptres ahead of the 2024-25 campaign. The 29-year-old has one assist in 43 career regular-season games in Toronto, and spent four seasons with the PWHPA from 2019-23 and one season with the CWHL’s Calgary Inferno in 2018-19.

“We thank Kaitlin Willoughby for her contributions to the organization and her impact on the team, fans and community as an inaugural member of Toronto’s team,” said Toronto General Manager Gina Kingsbury.

For Kjellbin, she was drafted by the Victoire in the sixth round of the 2024 PWHL Draft and has one point to her name, an assist in 18 games this season. The 30-year-old Göteborg, Sweden product played 15 years in the SDHL, most recently with Luleå HF, where she won three-straight championships. Kjellbin also represented her country at the 2022 Olympics and has played in five Women’s World Championships, serving as Sweden’s captain in the 2024 tournament in Utica.

“Anna, a right-handed D, brings international experience and is a proven leader as the captain of Team Sweden. We are excited to welcome her to our Sceptres family,” continued Kingsbury.

Willoughby will make her Victoire debut on Tuesday night in Boston against the Fleet, while Kjellbin will do the same with Toronto when they host the New York Sirens on Wednesday. Following those games, Toronto will meet with Montreal on Sunday, Mar. 23.
