Raiders lose 4-1

Inconsistency leads Raiders to loss in Saskatoon

After Friday night’s game saw the Raiders lose 3-2 to the Saskatoon Blades at home, the Prince Albert Raiders still had a lot to feel good about heading into the rematch on Saturday considering how they played. The Raiders would start with a good push, but the Raiders wouldn’t be able to keep a consistent push through the game and would fall 4-1.

The Raiders came out of the gate to storm out to a 5-0 lead in the shots, but the Raiders took the game’s first penalty and that derailed that early push. At the 7:47 mark, the Blades would score when Cooper Williams put a pass towards the slot that Hunter Laing tipped in.

Before the end of the period, Tyrone Sobry would drop the gloves with Kohen Lodge, but Sobry would also get another penalty for roughing on the play. The Raiders would kill that off, but another late penalty to Tomas Mrsic would give the Raiders a penalty kill to start the second.

After 1: Raiders 0 – 1 Blades, shots 12-7 Blades

The Raiders would kill off Mrsic’s penalty and another Sobry penalty after that, but another call on Rilen Kovacevic would give the Blades their fifth straight powerplay where the Blades would score. As the Blades were just setting up the powerplay, and Cooper Williams would send the puck towards the goal looking for a tip, but it hit a defender and into the back of the net.

The Raiders would finally get their first powerplay of the game with ten seconds left in the period, starting the third on the powerplay.

After 2: Raiders 0 – 2 Blades, shots 17-14 Blades, 29-21 Blades overall

The third period saw the Raiders we’ve become accustomed to seeing this season. They were fast, they were aggressive, but they’d run into a great goaltender that would stop that push. At the 13:02, Hunter Laing would get his fifth point of the weekend when he fired a hard wrist shot in on the rush.

Then at the 18:50 mark, the Blades would score on an empty net which would serve as their only shorthanded goal of the season thanks to Tyler Parr.

With their final of three powerplays still on in the final minute, the Raiders wouldn’t even use a powerplay unit to finish the game, but they’d find a way to break the shutout. Tyrone Sobry would cycle the puck to Linden Burrett, and he’d send a pass to Oli Chenier who blasted a onetimer into the back of the net for his third of the season with 16 seconds left.

FINAL: Raiders 1 – 4 Blades, shots 20-6 Raiders, 41-35 Raiders overall

The Raiders are still first in the East Division, but they now only have a single point lead over both the Brandon Wheat Kings and the Saskatoon Blades. The Raiders are off until Wednesday when they start a three game Alberta road swing starting in Lethbridge.
