Edward Lato
1945 ~ 2025
Our dearest Husband, Dad and Papa, Edward Stephen Lato passed away peacefully on February 7, 2025, surrounded by his loving wife and children.
Ed was born on January 30, 1945, to Ludwik and Teofila Lato in Prince Albert, SK. He was the youngest of 9 children and grew up on the farm in Spruce Home, SK. He attended Centerville School, Christopher Lake High School and graduated from Wakaw High School. He was the only one of his siblings to achieve an academic Grade 12. He went on to obtain his journeyman in Plumbing and later acquired his certificate in Instrumentation. Education was so important to our Dad, he instilled in us that it was “the one thing that no one could ever take away from us.”
Ed met the love of his life and best friend, Caroline Bazarkiewicz in October of 1965 at a good friend’s wedding. They were married on September 1, 1967. Ed and Carol raised their family in Regina, SK with many weekends spent at the family cottage the “Summer Place” at Katepwa. Many days were spent in the boat being pulled around on the tube, kneeboarding, skiing, fishing and cruising – listening to tunes on the 8 Track. He loved to take his kids on long trail rides on the motorbikes and snowmobiles. Nights were spent around the bonfire roasting wieners and singing good ol’ tunes. Dad loved hosting our annual lobster cook out. Our cabin, just like our home, was always welcoming, he treated all of our friends as his own.
Dad always had a project going. He had a hard work ethic which he instilled in all of us. Our Dad had a brilliant mind, always coming up with one-of-a-kind solutions, tinkering in his garage and shop, creating tools and inventions to solve any problem. He enjoyed spending this time with his side kick Kory, teaching him all the tricks of the trades.
Dad was a talented, self-taught musician, influencing and supporting Kevin in his musical interests. He was an amazing accordion player and had an excellent singing voice. He would play for hours while his girls Ukrainian danced to his music, Kevin playing along. Our basement and garage was the stage for several jam sessions, everyone was invited.
Dad was an incredible dancer. He commanded the dance floor with our Mom in his arms. Just like in life, his lead was smooth and natural, carrying himself with energy and precision and always making it fun.
Dad was blessed with his “two treasures” Jacey and Darly. He loved being a Papa and took this role to the max. The girls have wonderful memories of nightly tuck ins, teaching them to ride a bike, potty training, homework and building things. Story times, watching movies and cuddles were their favorite. Papa loved to be sneaky with the girls and tease Nana. He would make sure they were stocked up on ice cream, “7 come 11” slurpees and corn dogs. His babies were very well known to everyone he met. He was proud of their achievements and supported their dreams of becoming a Doctor and the future Prime Minister of Canada. When the girls came into the room everything stopped and his focus was them. His love for them was endless and his legacy will live on in their hearts forever.
Dad and Mom travelled a little, but he was always happiest at home with his family. He loved the simple things: a cold beer, a rum and coke or a white rum Caesar, good music, a good laugh and spending time with his family. They don’t make them like our Dad anymore !
He will be forever missed and never forgotten by his loving wife, Caroline; children, Kevin (Candice, Elsie); Kimberly (Kim, Jaxon); Kelly and Kory. His granddaughters, Jacey and Darly. His sisters, Mary, Anne and Edna.
He was predeceased by his infant son, Deryl; parents, Ludwik and Teofila; brothers, John, Frank and Joseph; sisters, Stella and Helen.
Your work here is done Dad and we Thank You for everything, We Love You – Rest in Peace xoxo
