Raiders finish Alberta road swing with electric overtime win in Medicine Hat

Feb 9, 2025 | 12:33 AM

With two losses in Calgary and Lethbridge to start off the road swing, the Prince Albert Raiders went into Medicine Hat to take on the Tigers in a game where both teams were frustrated with their last two efforts. Both teams had lost their last two games after long point streaks, but the Raiders managed to take the lead four times in the game on their way to a 5-4 overtime win.

The Raiders opened the scoring at the 11:43 mark thanks to former Raider Tomas Mrsic. In an unassisted effort, Mrsic poked the puck away from the Tigers’ defence at the Raider blueline and went in on a breakaway, faked the shot on the forehand, then went to the backhand and roofed his 30th of the year.

The Tigers tied it 30 seconds later at 12:13. The puck came to the front of the net where Markus Ruck swatted the puck off of Max Hildebrand’s pad, and the puck popped out to brother Liam Ruck who potted it into the back of the net.

Before the end of the period, the Raiders scored at the 17:17 mark on the powerplay. Mrsic from the left side of the blueline sent the puck to Lukas Dragicevic, and he sent the puck on goal towards the left side where Niall Crocker tipped it to the right and into the back of the net for his 19th of the year.

After 1: Raiders 2 – 1 Tigers, shots 12-7 Tigers

The Tigers got a powerplay early in the second period, and 31 seconds into the period they’d score to tie it. Tanner Molendyk got a look from the middle of the blueline, and Ryder Ritchie tipped it into the back of the net.

Then at the 7:39 mark, the Tigers would take their only lead of the game. Molendyk started the play again with a shot from the point, and the puck would be blocked high in the air before it landed in the slot. Misha Volotovskii would swat at the puck, and it found its way into the back of the net.

The Raiders didn’t back down through a tightly contested middle portion of the period, and at 18:48 mark they’d tie it on the powerplay again. Mrsic sent the puck from the left point into the corner for Brayden Dube, and he would send it front for Crocker for the onetimer in tight. His first shot was stopped, but he forced the second shot through for his second of the game and 20th of the year.

Then at the 19:18 mark, 30 seconds later, the Raiders took the lead again for the third time. Vojtech Vochvest disrupted a Tigers entrance into the Raiders zone, and he sent the puck ahead for Harrison Lodewyk. He sped up the ice and sent the puck to the right for Rilen Kovacevic starting a 2-on-1, and Kovacevic ripped the shot on goal for his 26th of the season.

After 2: Raiders 4 – 3 Tigers, shots 10-10, 22-17 Tigers overall

The Tigers would press hard in the third period, but the Raiders would fend off the attack until late in the period. At the 14:13 mark, Gavin McKenna and Mathew Ward were fighting for the puck at the side of the net, and Ward would swat the puck off a defender and into the back of the net to tie the game.

With 14 seconds left in the game, the Raiders would get their fifth powerplay when Lukas Dragicevic was highsticked. That would carry over to overtime to give the Raiders a 4-on-3.

After 3: Raiders 4 – 4 Tigers, shots 11-4 Tigers, 33-21 Tigers overall

The Raiders were sent down the length of the ice on their first attempt to enter the zone on the powerplay in overtime, but on their second attempt they cycled the puck well and got set up. With Crocker in front of the screen, Aiden Oiring worked the puck to Mrsic on the right wall, and he sent it into the middle where Dragicevic blasted the puck into the net for his 12th of the year and the overtime winner.

FINAL (OT): Raiders 5 – 4 Tigers shots 1-0 Raiders, 33-22 Tigers overall

The Raiders will get set for a rematch with the Tigers on Wednesday when they come to Prince Albert. The Tigers however will be in Saskatoon the night before to take on the Blades.
