Tensions boil over as Raiders lose in Lethbridge

Feb 8, 2025 | 12:20 AM

After having their nine game point streak snapped in Calgary on Wednesday, the Prince Albert Raiders looked for a bounce back on their second leg of their Alberta road swing on Friday against the Lethbridge Hurricanes. With three fights throughout the game, the Raiders would fall 6-1.

Just 1:57 into the game, the Hurricanes got on the board when Brayden Yager sent a puck out of the corner to the point for Carsen Adair. He found a seam through the slot and fired it past Max Hildebrand to give the Hurricanes the lead.

Later in the period, Vojtech Vochvest would start the fisticuffs with Chase Peterson, and Vochvest let Peterson rattle punches off his helmet while Vochvest tried to take Peterson’s helmet off, but the moment Vochvest threw his first punch the two were seperated.

At the 13:38 mark, the Hurricanes would score again on the rush this time when Yager collected the puck as the trailing man and he fired a wrist shot top corner to find the back of the net.

After 1: Raiders 0 – 2 Hurricanes, shots 12-4 Hurricanes

It only took 3:08 into the second period for the Hurricanes to extend the lead in the second. Kooper Gizowski sent the puck towards the front of the net looking for a tip, and it went off a body and in before quickly being swept out by a Hurricanes’ stick. Play continued, but the horn would soon blow and the video review would show a clear goal.

The Raiders got their only goal of the game at the 17:22 mark that gave the team some life. With personel on the ice at 4-on-4, Vojtech Vochvest picked up an assist for winning a battle and getting the puck to Aiden Oiring, and he sent a great stretch pass that looked like it was intended for Tomas Mrsic when in reality it would go to Lukas Dragicevic, springing him on a partial breakaway. Dragicevic made a great move to move around the backchecking defender into the middle, and Dragicevic tucked it fivehole for his 11th of the season.

After 2: Raiders 1 – 3 Hurricanes, shots 16-8 Hurricanes, 28-12 Hurricanes overall

Just 2:06 into the third period, the Hurricanes took any wind the Raiders had out of their sails. On their third powerplay of the game, Noah Chadwick would get the puck at the middle of the blueline and fire through traffic to score.

Then on their fourth powerplay, the Hurricanes would score again on a tic-tac-toe play. Chadwick sent the puck to the right, setting up Yager for a onetimer that he instead sent through the middle to Leo Braillard on the left side who fired it home to end Max Hildebrand’s night 9:44 into the third.

Then the bell rang two more times, first between Dragicevic and Caden Price, with both men being tied up by the officials and not getting too much opportunity to land shots. Then it was Oli Chenier and Trae Johnson with the best fight of the night, both men standing and trading right hands with neither man taking the win by the end.

The Hurricanes added one more to finish the game at the 13:27 mark, this time shorthanded. Brayden Yager and Shane Smith would bust down the ice on a 2-on-1 and Yager set up Smith for the tap in at the doorstep.

FINAL: Raiders 1 – 6 Hurricanes, shots 9-6 Hurricanes, 37-18 Hurricanes overall

The Raiders will have to pick themselves up quickly as they finish their Alberta road swing in Medicine Hat on Saturday night against the Tigers. Both teams have lost their last two games in a row and are looking to bounce back.
