Myrtle Bauer
October 4, 1922 ~ January 9, 2025
Myrtle Viola (née Gehl) Bauer was born at home, located at Sec22 Twp3 Rge13 West2 (Bromhead, SK), the third of four children. In February 1932, the family moved to a homestead in the Makwa/Loon Lake area. Myrtle and her brothers, Gordon, Art, and Gerald attended Rabbit River school, walking the 3½ – 4 miles everyday and uphill both ways, as was often recounted. On September 6, 1941, she married Ervin, and they celebrated their 68th anniversary prior to his death in November 2009. Ervin joined the Army in 1942, and Myrtle stayed with her parents and Ervin’s parents while saving his army pay for a down payment on their first home together.
Dwayne joined their family in May 1943, and Gary in April 1945. After Ervin’s discharge from the Army, they moved to Makwa, where Ervin worked at the Paulhus store and then the Co-op, and Myrtle took in boarders and operated the telephone exchange. Cheryl was born in June 1951, and Murray in December 1953. In April 1956, the family moved to Paynton due to Ervin’s employment with the Co-op. In October 1957, they moved to Meadow Lake, then to Prince Albert in April 1965. Myrtle provided childcare services in both Meadow Lake and Prince Albert, and end of life care for several family and friends. She also cared for two of her grandchildren on a full-time basis during their primary years. After Ervin’s passing, Myrtle moved to Tamarack Villas, and then was one of the original tenants at Caleb (Points West Living) until her peaceful passing from life.
Myrtle was active with Good Shepherd and Messiah Lutheran Churches, both at a congregational level and with the women’s groups, Co-op Women’s Guild, and Canadian Cancer Society. She will be remembered for her friendly, warm nature, and genuine interest in people – especially children. Myrtle enjoyed spending time at Emma Lake and Mesa, AZ, as well as baking (buns, cinnamon rolls, cakes, cookies, lefse), preserving (she was known as the Marmalade Lady), picking berries, reading, gardening, visiting, playing cards and bingo, quilting (including baby quilts), crocheting, and knitting. She was well-known for her incredible memory which included names, family history, and dates (birth, anniversary, deaths, and other milestone events).
She is survived by her loving family: children, Dwayne and Jacquie Bauer, Gary and Joan Bauer, Cheryl Bauer Hyde and Wayne Hyde, Murray and Bonnie Bauer; grandchildren, Laura Leah (née Bauer) and Jeff English, Michelle (née Bauer) and Jason Smart, Jameson Hyde and Breanne Cuddington; great-grandchildren, Jonathan Smart, Delaney Smart, Ethan English, Keaton Hyde; sister-in-law, Anne Hamp Gehl; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her husband, Ervin; grandson, Craig Bauer; parents, Philip and Ella (née Ofstie) Gehl; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Gordon and Sadie (née Gysler) Gehl, Art and Lyda (née Underhill) Gehl, Gerald Gehl; and Ervin’s family – Wolfgong George and Theresa (née Bader) Bauer, Agnes and Lawrence Kaufman, John and Mavis (née Veale) Bauer, William Bauer, Robert and Frances (née Aitken) Bauer, Grace and Tom Cowan, Edward and Ella (née Paquet) Bauer, Margaret and Alfred Zarchekoff, Joe and Thelma (née Ditto) Bauer, Wilbur and Alma (née Bock) Bauer; and her ‘sister by choice,’ Viola (née Faber) Born.
