Seven years and counting; PA senior still knitting for homeless

Prince Albert’s homeless population once again has been given a warm sense of caring from a local senior who knits scarves for them.

Eleanor George has been knitting and donating scarves for the last seven years and, despite being 88, still spends much of her spare time throughout the whole year creating the gifts for Christmas.

“I won’t promise next year how many I’ll do, but I promise to still make them because I have lots of time and lots of yarn,” she said.

As per the standard, George is helped by her friend Arlene Kennedy and when the gifts are ready, they call on the mayor and a councillor to help distribute them.

This year, Kennedy made 32 scarves and two pairs of slippers and George made 52 scarves and an afghan. They combined that with some extras they had in storage ending up with 170 scarves to distribute.

“I felt a need when I read in the paper about what was happening to them. It was a small thing that I could do to help a little bit keeping them warm,” she said.

She relies on yarn donations from people to help keep the cost under control.

Mayor Bill Powalinsky and Councillor Dan Brown picked up the scarves and then took them to various organizations in the city that work with the homeless population.
