Mont St. Joseph residents featured in 46th annual Kyla Art Show and Sale

The lobby of the Mont St. Joseph Home in Prince Albert was lined with all kinds of art on Saturday for the 46th annual Kyla Art Show and Sale.

The sale featured pieces from the nine members of the Kyla Art Group along with two guest artists, and six residents from the Home.

The Group is made up of a range of artists from Prince Albert and the surrounding area including Annette Henbid, Kathie Bird, Lorna Boryski, Beryl Fournier, Caron Dubnick, Jaret Mayer, Kim Morrall, Marcel St. Amand, and Reanne Settee, while this year’s guest artists are Andrea Bird and Kyla Lewis.

This year also included art pieces from members of the Mont St. Joseph Home, including JJ Thimsen, Rae Copas, Al Mercier, Susan Basaraba, Shirley Roode, and Lea Regnier. The group is part of a program within Mont St. Joseph called ‘Artists at Home’.

Kyla Art Group treasurer Henbid mentioned that the ‘Artists at Home’ has close ties with Kyla.

“One of our artists has a family member who lives [at Mont St. Joseph] and he was aware of one particular lady, JJ, who is a painter. He kept saying she’s really a great painter and you can see the evidence of that here.”

Henbid said that if any pieces made by the ‘Artists at Home’ were sold, Kyla Art Group would buy a donation to the home. She added that the event not only supports both the Home and the Group, but it also supports a pair of local charities.

“We are partners with the Mont St. Joseph Foundation and the Rotary Club. The ticket prices go to the charity clubs and then if artwork is purchased, that’s how the Kyla Art Group makes its income.”

Tickets were $10 at the door or attendees could also buy a $40 ticket which would grant them first pick at any of the art being sold. Following the show, the Group donates any extra dollars they made to their charity partners.

Saturday’s show was one of their standard shows, and Henbid said there’s normally one big show a year.

“It usually happens anywhere from September to November, the group’s been around for 45 years so things have changed quite a bit. We used to sometimes have a summer show in Saskatoon, or we would go up to Elk Ridge for a few years. We move around depending on where there’s availability of a good location for us and if we go to a different community, perhaps they haven’t seen us before.”

In addition to the many spectacular art pieces, this year’s show featured a now permanent fixture within the Home, a floor-to-ceiling shelving unit covering the entire wall that now showcases all of the art that went unsold at Saturday’s show. That art is still for sale, however, a portion of the money made will be given to the Mont St. Joseph Foundation.

“When most of this art, if it’s not sold, we’re going to install it there and then it will be for sale. The foundation office will sell it and then keep a commission for the sale of that wall when they’re handling all those details.”

The wall can hold an estimated 50-60 pieces of art.

Among some of the art being sold on Saturday included acrylic and watercolor paintings, wire wrap jewelry, drawings, pottery, knitting, sculptures, and wood carvings and burnings.
