Weekend rink report: Mintos split in Southern Sask., Northern Bears swept by Regina

Nov 17, 2024 | 6:53 PM

It was another busy weekend on the ice for Prince Albert based hockey clubs.

Here’s how each of our local teams faired in their matchups:

Mintos split weekend road trip in Southern Sask.

The Prince Albert Mintos now sit second in the Sask. Male AAA Hockey League (SMAAAHL) standings following their two-game road trip in the South, facing off with the Notre Dame Hounds and the Regina Pat Canadians.

Game one was Saturday in Wilcox against the Hounds, which saw the Mintos jump out to a comfortable lead after the opening twenty. Evan Skoronski lit the lamp twice and Lincoln Rogers added a marker of his own to make it 3-0 after the first, while Carter Cole tickled twine less than two minutes into the second to quadruple the P.A. lead.

However, the Hounds began on the offensive midway through the frame with Ryder Gilroy and Ryken Arran scoring moments apart to quickly cut the lead in half.

The Mintos scored a short while later courtesy of Cole’s second of the night, but the Hounds wouldn’t let off the gas as Carter Hudyma beat the buzzer scoring on the powerplay with nine seconds to play in the period.

Exactly two minutes into the third, Rogers found the back of the net to restore P.A.’s two-goal lead. Meanwhile, Hudyma struck again a short time after to make it 6-4 Mintos.

With 36 seconds to play in the contest and P.A. dealing with penalty troubles, Arran potted his second of the game on the powerplay to make it a one goal game.

Despite the late marker, the Hounds could not convert in the final seconds to force overtime as the Mintos extended their win streak to three games with a 6-5 win.

Jayden Blanchette picked up the win in goal, stopping 26 shots.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE (game one)

Game two was a much different story for the Mintos as they struggled to muster up any sort of offence in Regina.

The Pat Canadians opened the scoring midway through the first with Maddox Schultz finding twine, but Prince Albert had an answer in the final moments of the period with Brock Kolibab’s seventh of the season to keep it tied, 1-1, heading into the second.

From there though, it was all downhill for the Green and Gold. Regina went on to hold P.A. scoreless for the remainder of the game while scoring another handful of goals. Schultz had another marker both the second and third to complete the hat-trick, Cruz Klapak and Prince Albert Raiders prospect Jonah Sivertson had markers in the middle frame, and Reid Bechard had the six and final goal in the third.

Josh Henry was in net for the Mintos in game two, making 42 saves.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE (game two)

Following the weekend, Prince Albert is 12-5-2 (W-L-OTL) on the campaign.

The Mintos now get 10 days rest before they’re back in action, hosting the Saskatoon Contacts on Wednesday, Nov. 27 at the Art Hauser Centre. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m.

Northern Bears swept in home set versus Regina

The Mann-Northway Northern Bears welcomed the defending Esso Cup Champions to the Art Hauser Centre this weekend, facing off with the Regina Rebels for a pair of games.

Game one went on Saturday afternoon which saw the lamp stay dark for the Bears.

The Rebels, who came into P.A. winless, managed a 6-0 route of Prince Albert, scoring twice in the first, three times in the second, and once more in the third.

Annika Neufeldt and Nikita Krayetski split time in net for the Northern Bears, combining for 22 saves in the loss.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE (game one)

Game two saw a little more life from the home team as Prince Albert tallied their first goal of the weekend.

Down 1-0 in the second, Mikiya Anderson broke the ice for the Northern Bears scoring her third of the season on the powerplay to tie it up.

Later though, Regina restored the lead with Cedar Swan’s second of the afternoon to make it 2-1 heading into the third. There, the Rebels only extended their lead thanks to Berlin Lolacher’s third marker of the weekend as Regina took game two, 3-1.

Nikita Krayetski was handed the loss between the pipes and managed 20 stops.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE (game two)

With the sweep, the Northern Bears are now 3-5-0-1 (W-L-OTW-OTL) on the season.

Timberjaks split road trip in Regina against Capitals, Silver Foxes

The Prince Albert Timberjaks are returning home from the Queen City with a split from earlier this weekend.

The Jaks opened the road trip with a tilt against the Regina Capitals where it began on the wrong foot.

After the Caps went up 2-0 in the first, Luke Evans snuck in a shorthanded goal for P.A. later in the frame to make it a one goal game after one.

Following Sean Brochu’s game tying powerplay marker midway through the second period, Regina would restore the lead less than three minutes later thanks to goals from Macade Ochitwa and Justice Montgrand.

Now in the third, Cohen Godlien scored again for the Caps early in the period to extend the lead to 5-2. After Keethan Isbister potted another for the Jaks with 7:45 to play, Regina scored twice more in the final moments to down P.A., 7-3.

Frank Chaboyer got the nod in net for game one, making 41 saves and taking the loss.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE (game one)

The Jaks took that loss on Friday personally as a day later against the Silver Foxes, they hit the ground running.

Prince Albert fed Regina a fistful of goals in the first, with Brody Anderson, Cohen Noreikat, Leon Natomagan, Brochu, and Isbister each finding the back of the net.

Ethan Palandri got the party started for the Foxes at the 10:03 mark of the middle frame, which was quickly followed by Natomagan’s second of the night.

Regina went on to make things interesting later in the game after they scored once more in the second and added two more markers midway through the third. With the score now 6-4 and in the final minute, Isbister potted the empty netter on the man advantage for his team leading 14th goal of the season, and to secure the 7-4 win for the Timberjaks.

Brayden Lyons picked up the win in game two, turning aside 45 shots as P.A. now stands with a 5-8-2 (W-L-OTL) record.
