Red Wing assault case proceeds to trial after not guilty pleas

A man accused of committing a serious assault, and leaving his victim for dead, is maintaining his innocence.

Brian Arcand was not present when his case was discussed Friday morning at Prince Albert Provincial Court. Instead, not guilty pleas were entered by his lawyer and a trial date of June 26 was confirmed, and the option of June 27 as well if more time is needed.

The assault occurred at a home in Red Wing on September 29.

The police investigation showed that a fight occurred between two men, and the victim was seriously assaulted and forcibly confined.

He was able to escape and get help.

Arcand was arrested on October 1 and on this matter stands charged with aggravated assault, forcible confinement, having a weapon for a dangerous purpose and unlawfully causing bodily harm.

A member of the victim’s family was in court and disclosed to paNOW her brother was released from hospital. She also mentioned it was a very brutal and gruesome assault.

“He was left for dead and this has changed my brother’s and our lives forever,” she said.

Arcand also a separate charge related to a break-and-enter, and not guilty pleas have been entered. Trial dates are expected to be set on November 25.
