It is with tearful eyes but fond memories that we announce the passing of Richard Raymond Bremner on October 29, 2024, in the beautiful and peaceful surroundings of the Rose Garden Hospice with his cherished family by his side. As we sang some of dad’s favorite songs, he fell into his eternal sleep, free from the suffering he had endured.
Dad was born March 3, 1945, to Raymond and Hazel Bremner in Cuckfield England. He would be the first of their seven children and would grow to be a doting big brother to his siblings and was fondly called Ricky by them. He learned the value of hard work at a young age by helping on his uncle’s farm in Domremy, SK. His early interest in mechanics would lead him to obtaining his Auto Mechanics Certificate and soon after his Heavy-Duty Mechanics Certificate from S.A.I.T. His work ethic would lead him to a successful career at The Department of Highways which spanned 30 years as well as many, many hours of volunteering in our community that he genuinely loved.
In August of 1966 he would meet a spry English lady, our mum Joan Hooton, by a chance encounter at the Marlboro Hotel in Prince Albert, SK. They were married two years later, on August 1st, 1968, and their 56 years together would be enriched by three children, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Dad was a family man through and through. He spent countless hours being a soccer coach and cub scout leader for the boys and was a champion chauffeur and bleachers-sitter for all his children’s sports and later for his beloved girls. Oh, how he loved to watch his granddaughters dance and various other sports. They truly were the apple of his eye.
He wore many hats over the years. From being a P.A. famous jive dancer, computer whiz, skilled oil-distributor mechanic and later teacher of his trade, to compiling a downloaded music library like no other. He was also the happiest volunteering and helping others. He was passionate about his position on the Genealogy Society Board and proud member of the Metis Society where he dove into our family’s history and helped multiple family members learn their lineage. He was also a proud member of The Knights of Columbus for many years and served in many positions for St. Joseph’s Church masses.
Dad was a man of few words but when he did speak, he meant it, and it spoke volumes and still resonates with us today. His dad jokes, his hazel eyes, his huge heart and warm smile will be a comfort for all of us in the years we will now have without him. Rest easy “Pops”, “Ricardo”, “Ricky”, “Grampy”, “Dad”, “Sweetheart”…Love you to the moon.
Richard will be lovingly remembered by his loving wife Joan; children Lawrence (Brandi), Alison Bremner (Brent Gisi), Ian (Candace); grandchildren, Brynn, Kaylee, Victoria (Nolan) MacDonald, Jaylin, Makenna, Sophie; great-grandchildren, Declan and Aria; siblings, Lorraine (Richard) Eagle, Roxanne (Glen) Roberts, Lyle (Charlene) Bremner, Lester (Janet) Bremner, Elaine (Vince) Mappin, Elise (Elton) Opsal; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, work colleagues and friends.
Richard was predeceased by his parents Raymond and Hazel and we are comforted knowing they are together again.
We would like to send a heartfelt thank you to the nurses and doctors on level six at the Victoria Hospital, the staff at Rosthern Mennonite nursing home, our friends and relatives that visited dad and helped with his feedings and with mum’s transportation, and finally the exceptional staff at Rose Garden Hospice for making dad’s last moments peaceful.
Those wishing to do so can wear a touch of red (dad’s favorite color) to the service and if you are unable to attend, raise a glass of rum and coke (no ice 😉 in his memory.
Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 18th, 2024, at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, 260 – 25th Street East. Prince Albert, SK. Please join us for a luncheon and slideshow in the church basement as soon as the family returns from the Interment.
