Bottled water in demand but still supplying

Feb 11, 2012 | 12:48 PM

With the recent boil water order that’s been in effect since Feb. 3 in Prince Albert, the demand for bottled water has increased and some worry that supply won’t last.

Dale Ward, owner of Culligan Water Conditioning LTD in Prince Albert said they have been busy and experienced some scarcity with their bottles but explained water has always been available.

“We’ve been open every day this week. We haven’t shut down,” Ward said in response to the public’s concern that they had closed.

“Everything is business as usual basically.”

With the boil water order being announced so quickly, bottles flew off the shelf Ward said.

“We got caught a little bit in the beginning because it happened pretty quickly on last Friday and everything disappeared out of the store in a two hour period,” he said, adding that it’s hard to get product during the weekend.

“We have lots of new customers coming onboard and new customers require deposits—require bottles to use and of course with so many new customers all at once, as quick as the trucks are coming in with the bottles, the bottles are going out the door,” he explained.

However, even with the high demand Ward isn’t concerned. He said water is always available, adding that on Monday a truck load of new bottles will be coming in to satisfy demand.

“For the most part during the week we only had … 12 hours worth of restrictions (on bottles),” he said.

“The water has always been available. That’s never been the issue. The plastic is only coming in as quick as I can get it,” he said.  “At this point during this week we brought in as much plastic … in a week as we would in a whole summer season. The numbers are significant.”

Ward said that they have seen situations like this before and they always come through without much difficulty and assures the public that they will remain open and operational.  He explained that demand has also calmed down since the initial release of the order.

“The product will definitely be available in the coming week,” he said. “It shouldn’t be an issue.”
