TRHL set to embark on another season in Central Sask.

Teams, players, and board members alike are feeling the excitement ahead of opening night in the Twin Rivers Hockey League (TRHL).

President of the 12-team senior hockey league Raymond Carriere said everyone is chomping at the bit to get on the ice and start a new season.

“The season came up on us fast, it feels like it was just summer here and now into hockey,” he said. “I’m pretty excited, I think everybody is pumped and can’t wait to start a new season.”

According to Carriere, not a lot of changes happened in the offseason both to the league and its board, and the participating teams.

Like in previous years, the league will be split evenly into an East and West division that includes Allan, Birch Hills, Bruno, Clavet, Cudworth, and Hanley in the East, and Dalmeny, Hague, Rosthern, Shellbrook, Waldheim, and Willow Cree (Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Cree Nation) in the West.

Carriere said that there were a few communities within the league’s coverage area that submitted applications to join the TRHL, but league members voted against the additions to keep the league as is.

“It would have been nice [to have expansion] but at the end of the day, that’s what the membership decided. That’s what they wanted and 12, they thought, was a comfortable number.”

With opening night looming, Carriere shared what fans and players can expect this season.

“I think the parity in the league will be very high, some of the rosters got boosted up a bit which is good. I think you’ll see some of the teams that didn’t make the playoffs last year make it this year. It’ll be a competitive and fun season.”

The first two games of the new TRHL season are set for Saturday night, with Bruno taking on Clavet and Hanley trekking to Rosthern. Both contests are set for 8:30 p.m. starts.
