Northlands set to make several announcements, expected to host renowned writer Tomson Highway

Northlands College is welcoming new and returning students back to campuses in Northern Saskatchewan this week.

This academic year, Northlands will be announcing several new developments designed to enhance the educational experience for learners and the broader community. While no announcements are being made at the moment, there will be upcoming updates updates on health, wellness, trades and technology facilities.

The upgrades and enhance to these spaces will provide students with the best possible environment for their studies and practical training.

“Education is the foundation upon which we build a brighter future,” said Northlands President and CEO Karsten Henriksen.

“I encourage each of you to embrace this opportunity, work diligently, and take advantage of the resources and support available to you at Northlands. Together, we will continue to create pathways to success for the people of Northern Saskatchewan.”

Northlands will also be announcing new program opportunities that align with the evolving needs of the region. These programs are designed to equip our learners with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in the current job market.

Later this month, Northlands will be hosting Cultural Day celebrations in La Ronge. The event will feature a range of activities that honour and preserve Indigenous traditions. Participants can look forward to engaging in moose-hide preparation, round dances, smudge ceremonies, and pipe ceremonies. There will also be special guest speakers, traditional food, children’s activities, and paddle-making sessions.

A highlight of this year’s Cultural Days will be the hosting of Tomson Highway, a renowned playwright, novelist, pianist, and songwriter. Highway is one of Canada’s most influential Indigenous writers, whose works explore critical issues affecting First Nations people, including residential schools, reserve life, and Indigenous identity.

During his visit to La Ronge, Highway will share an evening with residents, offering profound insights into his life and experiences, and providing an opportunity for learning and reflection.

“This event is not only a celebration of our heritage, but also a powerful way to promote inclusivity and diversity among the many cultures that call our region home,” Henriksen said.

“We are especially pleased to host Tomson Highway, a Canadian legend, whose presence is a true honor for our community. His wisdom and experiences are invaluable, and we are grateful for the opportunity to learn from him.”
