Youth basketball league returning for second season

Sep 1, 2024 | 4:00 PM

A basketball league geared towards young teens in the Prince Albert area is returning for a second year.

Registration for the Prince Albert Community Basketball Association’s (PACBA) Winter Basketball League opens next week. Jim Guidinger is one of the current primary organizers and said the response last season was very positive.

“Just really it was the first opportunity for something like this within Prince Albert. Maybe going back years and years, there was some sort of league for youth, but nothing recently,” he said.

The league runs from October to February, and Guidinger noted they are planning for a bigger league this year with divisions including boys and girls 11U, 13U, and 15U.

There’s a game and practice each week, allowing the kids to develop some some skills and some team concepts.(Submitted/Jim Guidinger)

“The first season was a success for us. It was something we had to put together. Our hand was forced a little bit in that previously, we’ve been travelling to Saskatoon with some teams and playing in a Saskatoon League and then towards the very end of summer, they let us know that they weren’t allowing out of city teams from participating in their league anymore,” Guidinger said.

“So really with only a few weeks we we sort of scrambled and put together our own league and it went, yeah, it went off well. We had three or four teams participating in each division last year.”

Registration information can be found on PACBA’s website and social media pages (Facebook and Instagram).

The PACBA is a non-profit community organization that was established in 2009 and offers youth from kindergarten through high school the opportunity to participate in the sport of basketball in a structured, yet affordable, league and skill development programs.
