Over 5,000 childcare centre spaces will be allocated across Saskatchewan over the next year.

The Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan have committed to investing $71.3 million throughout 2024-25.

“This investment will create more opportunities for families to find accessible and high-quality childcare in their local communities,” Education Minister Jeremy Cockrill said. “Expanding childcare facilities throughout the province will be an addition to supporting the wellbeing for Saskatchewan families.”

According to a new release,1,537 childcare centre spaces have been allocated to new and existing facilities in 27 Saskatchewan communities and 36 organizations, with the remaining 3,463 spaces to be assigned throughout the fiscal year.

Canada’s Minister of Families, Children and Social Development Jenna Sudds said the spots will make a real difference and will ensure more kids can get off waitlists and into high-quality centres, and provide more families with access to affordable early learning and childcare in their communities.

The province will allocate funding for the creation of regulated childcare spaces on an on-going basis to not-for-profit organizations including cooperatives, municipalities, non-profit corporations and parent groups. Spaces will be approved based on community need.

Space development capital funding for centre development is also increasing by about $3,000 per space. Funding for start-up grants for regulated centres and regulated family childcare homes will also increase.
