Carl Alexander Danchilla of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan passed away peacefully on August 17th surrounded by his family at the Prince Albert Rose Garden Hospice after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Carl was born July 2, 1949, in Canora, Saskatchewan. He was the youngest of three children. Carl shared fond childhood memories of attending St. Peter and Paul Romanian Orthodox church, taking part in bible camp, playing with cousins, and helping wherever was needed on the acreage. Carl dedicated his life to helping others and his community. Upon completing high school in Canora he ventured onto various careers before moving to Ottawa in 1972 to join the Ottawa Fire department.
Carl met the love of his life Lucille Millette in Canora where she was employed as a school teacher and in 1973 they were wed. Carl and Lucille celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in September of 2023 with their family. In 1975 Carl and Lucille moved from Ottawa to Moosomin, SK where Carl worked as a highway traffic officer for three years. Then they moved to Stoughton, SK where Carl worked as a police officer for two years. In 1980 they moved to Prince Albert, SK where Carl was employed by the City of Prince Albert Fire Department. Firefighting ended up being Carl’s true calling. Carl advanced to the rank of Captain near the end of his career and earned the Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal in 2000 before retiring in 2003 with 25 years of service. He made several life long friends through the department.
In 1980 their first child Karen was born, followed by Brian in 1981 and Robert in 1983. Carl’s passion in life was his family. He passed onto his children the importance of their Romanian heritage, his creativity and of course his sarcastic sense of humor. He was the co-inventor of ‘dad jokes’! Carl showed great care towards the well being of his three children. This was often expressed as road trips whenever and wherever help was needed by them. Whether it was for transportation to a university across the country or a career interview, a move into a new house, or to assist in vehicle and home repairs, Carl was the dad who was always quick to pack up his car and assist. In later years he especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He could be counted on to show up at their events, teach them a new skill or game or to joke with them.
Carl picked up a love of woodworking from his late father and could be found often in his garage building something for a family member or friend. He enjoyed gardening and tinkering around on things. His family often kept him busy with projects that needed to be built or items that required fixing. Carl also enjoyed time in nature, whether it be going for walks, golfing or fishing. He was also a huge animal lover.
Carl found comfort in his spiritual faith and his lord Jesus Christ. He was an active member of St. Mark’s Parish Knights of Columbus and made several close friends at the parish. He also really enjoyed his time in men’s bible studies with the church and volunteering where he could in the community.
Carl is survived by his loving wife Lucille, daughter Karen (Landon) Code, sons Brian and Robert Danchilla, grandchildren Berlyn, Piper, Scarlett, Talia, Isabel, Elijah, and Samuel, and brother Roy Danchilla.
Carl was predeceased by his parents John and Eileen Danchilla, brother Donald Danchilla, Father and Mother in-law Charles and Marie Millette, brothers-in-law Adrien Millette, Ray Perreaux and sister in-law Bernadette Danchilla.
The family would like to thank everyone who visited with Carl, gave their prayers and helped in the last few years after his cancer diagnosis. Thank you to Dr.Iqbal who treated Carl’s cancer with care over the past four years. Special thanks to the staff of the Rose Garden Hospice who showed Carl and our family such compassion and care before his final journey with the Lord.
