Mayer withdraws from PA Carlton race

One week after releasing her name as a hopeful candidate to be the Sask. Party nominee for the Prince Albert Carlton seat, Meghan Mayer has announced she will not longer stay in the race.

Mayer said that her change of heart came after other candidates put their names forward.

“When I initially decided to run for Carlton Constituency there were no other candidates in the field. However, with new challengers now in the race, I believe it is in the best interest of the electoral process and the community for me to step aside,” Mayer said in an emailed statement.

Mayer is a local member of the business community and a pastor at Embassy Church.

The church which was connected in the past, through former pastor Duff Friesen, with Legacy Academy near Saskatoon. Some former school staff including Friesen are named in a lawsuit from former students alleging abuse. Mayer is not named in nor connected to the lawsuit.

Criminal charges have been laid against the staff, including Friesen although he has not been convicted of anything and his trial is pending.

With the only publicly-known candidate withdrawing from the Sask Party’s nomination process, the party says it will work on finalizing who their candidate to replace longtime MLA Joe Hargrave will be.

A nomination planning meeting will happen within the next few weeks, said a Sask. Party spokesperson.

He also confirmed Mayer voluntarily withdrew her name from the nomination.

A new candidate will be chosen within the next four or five weeks, he said, as the fall election looms.

The winning nominee will run against Carolyn Brost Strom for the NDP party. No other nominees have been named as of yet.
