Marlene Smith
1955 – 2024
The family of Marlene Smith is sad to announce her passing on Sunday, July 7, 2024.
Marlene was born to Lawrence and Christina Umpherville in Prince Albert, SK on July 23, 1955 at Holy Family Hospital. She lived in Molanosa, SK until 1962 when her family moved to Prince Albert, SK. She went to school at Prince Charles where she met her lifelong best friend Peggy Epp (Umpherville), who Uncle Kenny promptly stole from her. In 1969 she met Gary Shiers at the Quicky Mart, they fell in love and married in 1970. She had 4 children, Anthony born in 1970, Cyndie in 1973, Gary in 1974 and Chrissy in 1976. While they did separate in 1983, they remained friends throughout her life.
Marlene got a new lease on love when she met her late husband Sheldon Smith in 1993. They married March 23, 1996 and spent the beginning of their marriage on a beautiful acreage near Fenton Ferry until 2007 when they relocated to Port Alice, BC for Sheldon’s work. She loved Port Alice and made many lifelong friends there. In 2021 she said goodbye to the love of her life Sheldon and decided to move back to Prince Albert to live out her final years with her family.
Marlene loved being with friends and family. She would look for any excuse to host a dinner. She would always say “supper is at 6:00 p.m.” but it was a guarantee that we would not be eating until at least 9:00 p.m. She even did this from her hospital bed before she said goodbye.
Marlene had the greatest sense of humor, you were always assured to have many laughs with her beautiful face and smile. She was even joking in her final moments in life, she made us wear cardboard bedpans that she decorated with pink socks to look like a ribbon. She could make friends anywhere, just like her children, everyone loved her. Her smile lit up any room she entered.
Marlene is survived by her loving family. Her four children: Anthony (Tammi) Shiers, Cyndie Shiers (Lyle Howatt), Gary Shiers (Danielle Young), and Chrissy Shier (Rick Stevens); her grandchildren Justis, Holden, Dale (Stacie), Dustin, Dusty, Rebecca, Marissa, Jordon, Alyssa, Chloe, Ryder, Emmett, Lyndon, Becka, and Travis; and 11 beautiful great grandchildren.
Marlene is predeceased by her parents Lawrence and Christina Umpherville; her husband Sheldon Smith; her sister Barb Schell; her stepsons Steven, Searl, and Sean Smith; and her grandson Tyler Steven.
The Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 11, 2024 at Glen Mary Church, RM of Kinistino, SK. Marlene and Sheldon will be laid to rest in the Glen Mary Cemetery. Lunch and a time of fellowship will follow.
Goodbye our beautiful Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Auntie, and Friend. You are in Sheldon’s arms and forever in our hearts. We love you to the moon and back, “till we meet again”.
