Construction underway on new pea protein plant in Saskatchewan

Jun 26, 2024 | 11:08 AM

A groundbreaking ceremony marked the start of construction of a new pea protein isolate production plant in Yorkton, Sask.

The facility will be built at the site of Louis Dreyfus Canada’s (LDC) existing industrial complex. The new plant is expected to be operational by the end of 2025.

LDC’s new production plant will bring jobs and economic benefits to Yorkton, who have already experienced significant gains since the company opened its existing canola crushing facility there in 2009.

Saskatchewan Pulse Growers (SPG) Board Chair Winston van Staveren said having the plant in the province will be beneficial for farmers.

“This facility will be a new market opportunity for pulse producers, significantly grow the local economy, and contribute to the expansion of domestic value-added pea processing,” van Staveren said.

LDC Country Manager for Canada Brian Conn said by extracting the protein from peas and converting it via a proprietary process into isolate, it can fit into a variety of different products including meat alternatives, dairy products, sports, nutrition drinks. Conn believes there will be plenty of markets for their product.

“There’s certainly competitors in the space, but we believe being located in the right location like Yorkton, being able to source from the right growers and produce the right product, we believe we can be competitive in the marketplace like we are with our canola business,” he said.

Conn said LDC is working with several large companies in Canada, US and Mexico to market and merchandise product.

“Of course, it’s a long process, but we’re certainly in it for the long run and we’ll be working with them every step of the way once the plant gets up and running,” Conn added.

The pea protein production plant will have roughly 60 employees.
