P.A. Legion presents skilled student with $500 cheque

Roughly a week before heading to Quebec to compete at the Skills Canada competition, Prince Albert’s Hudsyn Johnson has received some financial assistance.

During a special event Thursday night at Prince Albert Legion Branch #2, the Carlton Comprehensive Public High School student received a cheque for $500.

Johnson, 17, is the grandson of a veteran; the Legion is actively supporting v6eterans and their families, especially youth in their communities.

The Skills Canada competition runs May 30 and 31 in Quebec City and Johnson is one of two Carlton students chosen to compete at the national level.

According to a post on the school’s social media page, Johnson discovered the electrical trade in Grade 9 and quickly realized he was good at it and loved to solve problems and make things work.

“He says he’s most inspired by his Dad who is his biggest supporter and always pushes him to try new things, even when it’s hard or scary,” the school said.

The other Carlton student is Naviah Johnson, who is competing in photography.

Last year, when she was in Grade 10, Naviah competed in the Skills Canada Provincial Competition and brought home bronze. That same year she entered images in the Prince Albert Exhibition Association photo contest and gained some more exposure for her work.

Just last week she won the photography award at the Mann Art Gallery juried high school art show.

Naviah says the most exciting thing about photography is being able to express herself creatively and being able to envision something and bring it to life.
