Prince Albert Aces start season strong with tournament win

May 14, 2024 | 5:00 PM

It’s been a great start to the season for the U11 A Prince Albert Aces.

The girl’s softball team won their first tournament of the season last weekend, bringing home the gold medal from an early bird tournament in Saskatoon. It was the team’s first game action of the season after some inclement weather led to some cancellations.

“It was a really good tournament for the girls…it actually surprised myself a little bit,” said Head Coach Amy Fiddler, whose group competed against four Saskatoon-based teams. “Had some really strong pitching, some really good hitting this weekend, so it was nice to see.”

Fiddler said the team is also scheduled to play in tournaments in Moose Jaw and Regina, along with hosting their own tournament at the end of May. They’ll also be back in Saskatoon for provincials in early July.

Fiddler added that softball is growing in Saskatchewan.

“There’s up to 60 U11 teams…this is the first year in U11 that they’re separating into A and B divisions,” she said. “So come provincials they’ll have two different groups running from the north and the south. We have an A and B team here in Prince Albert and there’s still a few more to form house league teams as well, so it’s good to see.”
